Is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni better as a VN than as a anime? Do they pull anything special about the presentation and shit in the anime enough to justify the loss of some VN elements?

I'd play the original PC version over Matsuri/Kizuna, just for the music. Though the voice acting and graphics add a lot. Though you'll still have to endure the graphics if you are interested enough to try Umineko as well.

If you can't read Japanese just watch the anime. The VN will take for ever to be translated in its entirety; assuming the translators don't simply give up.

The Higurashi board on Animesuki has a thread with the TIPS and one with the fragments from the start of Matsuribayashi-hen. Read those afterwards to get some info that was left out of the anime.

Does the VN slowly degenerate into a pathetic Home Alone-esque "kids against the grownups!" farce like the anime? I loved Higurashi for a while but during season 2 it got worse and worse until I stopped watching.

Yeah ive played better but it wasnt the worst or the best that ive played and ive played a lot of games that werent all that good not that i didn't like them but there are just better things out there to try out you know, just get a feel for things you like and give it a shot you might or might not like it just try it out first.
