What do you do to stay motivated with your Japanese language studying?

I imported several of the games that I most want to play but will never be localized and I put them right next to my computer so every day I have to look at them and think about how I can finally play these once I have learned enough.

It keeps me motivated.

I severely whip my back with a belt if I ever get lazy and avoid doing my reps. If I avoid doing it multiple days in a row then I smash my head against the wall and punch myself repeatedly.

I once gave myself a black eye, cut my forehead on the edge of a table, and punched a piece of metal until my knuckles were bleeding after three days of slacking.

I was a huge yurifag back before things were really getting translated much. After a fairly rudimentary formal education in the language, I just kept reading because there was no other way to access material. I just kept looking shit up, because I had to know what happened next.

I also do what OP does -- I have a huge pile of LNs on my desk at the moment.

I'm losing my spirit to persevere.

I recently realized that I can read anything I see, but I have no idea what any of it means. I thought I had accomplished something when I finally firmly drilled kanji into my head and before that when I memorized the kana, but now the obstacles ahead seem so much bigger. If it took me nearly a year just to get down the ABCs of Japanese then how long will it take me to understand the complex grammar rules and an entire vocabulary?

It's like being able to read romaji. Anyone can do it if they can read English but none of it will make any sense. Why do people act like learning kanji is such a big accomplishment? It's nothing. I still don't understand anything.

I stay motivated out of necessity. I call it the "sink or swim" method.

I installed the Japanese version of windows, I install every game in Japanese if possible, and all of my electronics are set to Japanese language whenever possible. Initially I had no idea what the fuck was going on in everything I did and just finding the sound settings was difficult but it got easier and easier as I continued to study. I stay motivated because if I stop then I won't be able to do simple things like read the start menu.

That's funny. If it's such a "faulty argument", why has it worked so well for me, when I could never get anywhere when I was trying to study only kanji?

First, just by learning vocab you pick up on the meanings and readings of the kanji pretty quickly. Second, the fact is that a lot of the time the meaning of a word has little to do with the meanings of its component kanji. Third, your logic is backwards: kanji acquisition is a lot harder without vocab knowledge. Why would you try to learn something you have absolutely no context for? Learning kanji one by one is just wasting your time. All it does is give you an extra mnemonic that might or might not help you with your vocab in the beginning, but it's counterproductive as often as not.

In any case, one of the most important things when learning a language is to see it and use it in a natural context. You want to get to the point where you can read real sentences in real situations as quickly as you possibly can, because your learning will skyrocket from there. In order to do that, you absolutely have to have grammar and vocabulary knowledge. But if you want to waste months learning kanji only to find they won't actually help you read anything, I guess that's your prerogative.

I could use some motivation...

I took 6 semesters of Japanese at my university but I feel like I barely know anything at all...

I'm kicking myself because despite wanting to learn Japanese forever, I never gave myself the proper amount of time to study. I'm not taking Japanese in my senior semesters because not only do I feel like I don't deserve to be there but my memory is shit and I couldn't have a conversation to save my life... (in Japanese I mean).

I got Rosetta stone, all 3 levels, and I also bought Soul Eater 1 and the latest Soul Eater manga out in America to motivate myself. (I've watched Soul Eater and figured if I was going to translate something it should be something I have an idea about of what's going on). Unfortunately... it hasn't motivated me at all. I started out using a dictionary and it's just painful... Figuring on reading the Japanese along side the English manga and trying that... but yeah.

I came to university this semester with a positive mindset for getting my work done and doing Rosetta stone but ... then a bunch of things got messed up and I've severely been lagging behind on my goals and prospects to the point where I've almost reverted to my old lazy self.

I could really use some motivation...

Make a list of shit you want to play read and stop using Rosseta Stone. I'm telling you this only because I love you as a person anon.
STOP USING ROSSETA STONE.

Read everything in the OP

And pace yourself, of course you're going to lose motivation if you try reading something hard or not reading at all. Read something easy for start like Yotsubato, once you realize you can actually read instead of doing drills over and over again shit will get more fun.

Woah man, All of what i just read is horseshit. We all have things in life that drag us down, but that doesn't mean we can just give up.

You may say that you've reverted back to your old lazy self, But just think about all the other prospects in what you've achieved in the past 3 years. Just keep at it dude, I as an anon believe in you, and i think you can do great things, Just set your mind on the forward path and kick your old lazy self in the ass. Become a new man, prove to yourself you are worthy of living in your own skin. If times are rough, forget about them, These things happen to the best of us.

tl;dr : Stop being a faggot, Focus, Do great. I know you can.

Oh wow... I will have to read this and check the older threads linked and stuff. Thanks so much.

Also I haven't exactly started Rosetta stone so lol... easy to stop. Is it really that horrible?

I will check into Yotsubato also. I mean I was sort of on pace when I was taking classes at my university but being college classes and all they sort of ended up moving faster and faster as the semester progressed and it became harder to keep up or there was just too much material all at once.

I actually have ADHD and have been on meds for it since I was pretty young but I don't take it anymore despite still filling prescriptions. I really don't like being medicated but... when I don't take it I feel like I can't remember shit... My memory has always been pretty awful but it just gets worse when I don't take my meds. Problem is when I start taking my meds after a while of not I end up feeling like absolute shit for quite a while. Blah... I want to take it again for the sake of being able to remember what I study but I don't want to feel like a coke addict.

It's not bad if you're going to a trip in Japan and want to prepare yourself but it is bad for learning the language.
And I know about the agony of ADHD, but it just means you need to try harder, Once you have a regular routine of studying it might become easier.

頑張って!

I definitely want to stop being a faggot. I pepped myself up heavily and was feeling great when the semester started a few weeks ago. I just got back from driving cross country (NY to Seattle) and I was in the zone. Then shit happened and I'm kind of in a rut. I've been working on it though but learning Japanese seems to be the bane of my existence despite my major being Asian American Studies with a focus on Japan..

:/

If I don't study it religiously as in like all day every day for the rest of time, I won't be able to remember it in a few days. It's really horrible. I used to have an excellent memory but I don't really know what happened... Seems like it went south when I went to college... why the hell has college messed me up so much?

Shit... I used to be active in clubs and had friends and was studious and all that but now I'm like a border hikkikomori... I need to get my act together.

Removed my last two posts cause I realized how much of a little bitch I sounded like.

Not anymore. After class I'm going to go through all those links and grab a notebook and just start getting shit done. No more excuses.

What side affects did you get on Concerta? I've been taking Concerta since I was like ...8 or younger and I'm 22 this year. My normal is 36 mg but I've been up to 54mg. The only negative affects i've faced (other than tripping balls and feeling like shit when I don't take it for a long period of time then start back again) is perhaps nail biting, slight anxiety? and little to no appetite, as in I have to force myself to eat.

Frankly, I'm sick of being medicated even though it helps me a lot especially with my memory.

Do your god damn reps, anon.

>>9749245
No appetite
headaches
Insomnia
stomach ache
shaking
excessive sweating
overall shitty feeling
diarrhea

Also, taking Concerta from such an early age might have been what screwed your natural ability to concentrate.
How long has it been since you stopped taking Concerta? Either way I think you should consult a doctor if the situation really is as bad as you describe.

>> No.9749290

>>9749267

I didn't have many headaches but I did have insomnia if I took my meds later than 9am everyday. Concerta is 12 hour time release so no matter what you do, if you take it late you'll be awake forcibly. If I take it after a time lapse I get the shaking, stomach ache, sweating, shitty feel. Never had intestinal problems.

You're probably right to some degree. I don't really have a problem concentrating at all it's just remembering things. I've relied on it for so long that I think my brain expects in whenever I learn something new. I've been off my meds for a couple of years though I have taken them occasionally during that period for perhaps a couple of days max before I quit again. I didn't want to go to college relying on meds but I think not taking them has screwed over a lot of my studying / test ability. I definitely have seen a decrease in my grades...

Ask him for either a different kind of meds or find a different solution. Getting the advice of a different doctor is also a good idea. I've personally known doctors who push these things on kids that clearly don't need anything, fucking jews.

The problem with the meds is that they push it on eight year old children because they believe they are hyperactive but isn't it normal for children to be a little hype? the pills can ruin a lot of thing for the kids and it's such a damn shame parents go and shove pills into their kids easily like that.

>> No.9749330

>>9749308

Well I mean I really did have problems focusing when I was little. Looking back I feel like the meds definitely helped but yes at the same time have messed me up as an adult. I fear being medicated for the rest of my life in order to be productive.

He's not just a doctor but a neurologist but I definitely feel like seeking a second opinion. I do feel however that now doctors just prescribe crap to kids whose parents say oh my kid doesnt do his work cant focus etc when say the kid is just disinterested in the topic or is just acting like a normal kid.

How long difficult is grammar and when should I tackle it?

I'm going through vocab now and that's pretty easy, but when I see a sentence of text I can pick out a few words but for the most part I have the idea what the fuck I'm reading.

I would like to do grammar now, but is it too soon?

Anyone got tips on a decent kanji Anki deck? I tried the Heisig one but there is no mention whatsoever of kunyomi and onyomi, and that makes it almost useless in my opinion.

By the way, how do you all do the daily kanji stuff via a notebook?

I tried writing it down in a book like the image is and then doing repetitions next to it but its just too cramped...

do you all have some sort of system going on already that works for writing the daily kanji/kana/reading in a notebook for repetitions?
