This reason alone is more childish than watching Anime. There isn't much of a difference between Anime and VNs. /jp/ needs needs to grow out of their hipster phase already.

It's pretty mainstream. The only thing that's really looked down upon is otaku, and there's a pretty clear distinction between liking anime/manga, and being an otaku.

Anything other than Shounen jump/Ghibli is seen as otaku and looked down on.
