TL;DR at the end. Also, splitting the post since there's a lot for me to say. Sorry if this isn't the place.

So for the longest time, Japan and its culture has impressed the shit out of me. Growing up with Pokemon and Nintendo is what started it all, I suppose. I've always been utterly obsessed with technology. I still am. Every time I'd read my books or saw pictures about the best technology in the world, everything almost always pointed to Japan. ASIMO has always astounded me. When I was about 9 years old, I got into anime because I'd stay up late at night and watch Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim. I usually only saw what played on Adult Swim, but my interest in anime developed over a few years.

When I got into high school, I started watching anime more and more, and I became a lot more familiar with Japanese culture as a whole. Naturally, after watching as much anime as I did, I ended up hearing a lot of actual Japanese being spoken (Like in subbed series and such) and I was amazed at how beautiful the language sounded. I also caught yellow fever -- Japanese women are amazing. A couple years ago, I read "36 views of Mount Fuji" and I started feeling fanatical about Japanese culture. The more and more I read about Japan, the more I feel like I can't stand living in America anymore. I admire their modesty, honesty, and hard-working attitude. Above all else, I love that the Japanese people seem unified through culture and patriotism. Whether or not I have the wrong idea about the patriotic population in Japan, I DO know that they're a traditional country -- No one is removing holidays from the calendar because it "offends" someone, no one is demanding that Japan accept all the cultures from around the world, and they seem like ONE body of people, not a bunch of tribes and groups living on a piece of land. You may or may not agree with my opinion about America, but I can't stand it anymore, not having a culture and having people come into our country and demand that we accomodate their language, religion, lifestyle, etc.

Near the end of high school, I decided that I want to learn Japanese, and try living there temporarily (at first), and maybe end up living there permanently if I liked it. It's been about a year and a half, and I'm way further down the road than I've ever been when it comes to Japan, but I'm still so far from my goal. I started studying Kana (I know almost all of them now), I started torrenting shitloads of Japanese music, which I almost exclusively listen to now, and I started a couple different language learning programs that I haven't gotten very far with, but I intend to take them very slow and steadily. (iStart Japanese, Pimsleur, and a couple traditional flashcard sets/self-teach charts) I'm currently in my third semester of college and I'll eventually be working toward a double major in English and Graphic design. Obviously I want be making any permanent arrangements in Japan until I've gotten a degree, but I AM hoping that my studies will be useful for job hunting when I'm there.

I need some advice on getting there, since I assume some of you have been there, or maybe even live there. I want to -really- get going on my Japanese, and get out in the world. I'm so tired of sitting here wishing I was in Japan instead of doing something about it, but at the same time I feel a little powerless since I have no idea where to REALLY start. One of my first goals is to be more "connected" with Japan. Studying their alphabets and listening to their music isn't going to make the culture any easier to become a part of. I want to keep up to date with what's going on, and I want to know what to expect when I get there. I'm going to try and find myself a penpal sometime soon and start looking for a job to pay for all of this (Currently 19 years old).

TL;DR: I want to go to Japan, but so far I'm just a shy, lazy anime pro. Any advice? I'd really appreciate it.

Why are you posting this on /jp/? I'm sorry, but no one cares about you and your weeaboo fantasies, it does not make you any different from the 60% of people on this board who share the same feelings.

This is not your blog.

Gomenasai, my name is Ken-Sama
I'm a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)

I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

>not asking anyone to care

Then why did you post this blog shit instead of just asking for advice?

And what kind of question is that, it's up to you to decide where you want to go. If you can't decide what to do next, then your "interest" in Japan isn't as strong as you claim.

Btw this is Otaku culture, not Japan/General.

I see. Well, sorry about the spam then.

I guess it WAS a bit of a waste of time to type that wall of text, but I figured it'd be best to have a little background for advice since I honestly have no idea what else I need to do to prepare. :P

>>9708117

That's what I'd like to do, but I'm pretty certain that packing up and permanently moving to a different country isn't as easy as just paying for the plane ticket. Meh.

I just figured that if you guys have decent advice to give, you'd need to know where I'm at when it comes to how much of the language I know and such. I didn't really mean for it to be the story of my life, but I went a little overboard. :P

>Btw this is Otaku culture, not Japan/General.

I realize my grave mistake now. Derp. Thanks for pointing that out -- I'll try my luck on another board sometime.

Here's a Youtube channel for some fat guy who lives in Japan.
http://www.youtube.com/user/tkyosam2
This might help you understand what it feels like to be a filthy gaijin living in glorious Japan. If you're lucky, he might answer some of your questions.

I don't think it's a good idea to move to Japan. I suggest you move to a debt-free country that has a bright future.
