It got several print works of high quality and became even better than it ever was before. THAT is what happened. In the meantime, despite gaining massive popularity, Zun hasn't even slightly let it go to his head, and hasn't damaged the integrity of his vision.

The games are still great, but you know how people are. If something changes in a way they dislike they call it objectively "horrible", rather than just acknowledging that sometimes tastes change on either side of a creation.

What I really can't stand is the people that say it sucks because its popular. And more than anything I can't stand the people, with EVERY SINGLE GAME, say the music sucks. People did that for MF, SA, UFO, and now TD. And you know what? All of them had great soundtracks.

This is very admirable. I commend ZUN for not going astray with original Touhou. His original vision of Touhou is what made it so great and popular. If he changed it or gave into the fandom, it wouldn't be Touhou anymore.
Many people don't seem to realize this and complain that he never does anything to appease the fandom. They don't realize, that he's not even making the games for them to begin with. He does it for his own entertainment.

It's not just music, you know. Gameplay, characters, story, everything. Meanwhile every single previous game is a modern classic.

Only EoSD/PCB are spared from the quarrels so far, but I wonder what will happen some ten years from now, when there's a gap of entire generation between EoSD and the most recent entry in the series. I'm pretty sure kids won't understand.

heres what happened

every game after Touhou 8 Imperishable Night
suck.

1. the music is less memorable and isnt as great as th6, 7 and 8.
2. the style changed, everything is smaller and faster while the gameplay area(the rectangle on the left) is the same.
3. the power system is lame because you can have like 10 bombs with 1 life.
4. he removed death bomb, its almost impossible to bomb if you try to do it at the last second you still die.
5. (my opinion) the characters after IN are not really memorable.

the music in these games are really important. i dont mind dieing in touhou 6, 7 and 8 because the music makes me feel badass.

on the other hand, the games after IN are just a pain. the music is just annoying.

i think that happens in a series that has too many games

my personal favorite is Touhou 8 imperishable night.

Touhou is fine, even getting better since its popularity is going down and luckily we'll get rid of the retards who joined because the series got popular, the people who claim the first games are better are partially blind by nostalgia in the best case and retards in the worser.

Even if Touhou becomes a little community here I'll be glad to discuss it with the ones who'll remain, in fact I'm looking forward to it, has to be said that Touhou is not just a series of games, print works, music cds and other stuff, Touhou is the community too, and elitism aside, I'm glad to have met you /jp/

You're right, but even so I often get the feeling of people taking about the "good old days" and "it changed, now it's bad". The principe is the same.

Give it another year. TD soundtrack is more subtle, less melodic. It has many tracks that I feel are very different from previous games, but that's what I like about it. But at the same time, it also has a lot of the cozy melodies that I think are reminiscent of earlier windows games.

TD is seriously the blandest and most boring game to date, by far.

Soundtrack is completely forgettable, except maybe Yoshika's theme. The characters are forgettable too, since they're just literal copypastes from their original inspiration without any ZUN-touches, except of course Mami who is an average Tanuki dressed up like ZUN.

Now ZUN is trying to force them into the manga trying to make people like them since characters of the previous games struggle to get a mere cameo.

The last good game for me was SA, MoF was bland too, but at least had good soundtrack...ish.

TD has the best stage 6 atmosphere.

You're flying through an infinitely huge space, surrounded by what look like miniature stars, the low beats thum through you as you get nearer and nearer to your goal. Finally, as you see Miko for the first time and the steady beat drives on, you come to the realization that Miko has been waiting for you this whole time, you can't stop her resurrection, she has already reached her ultimate goal of immortality and divine power. She is the one that can conquer Gensokyo. And then, as soon as she reveals all of this to you, True Adminisrator kicks in, the initial guitar riffs start right as the danmaku starts to fly, and you know then that no matter the outcome, Miko has already won, you're fighting against the inevitable as you exchange danmaku in the starry sky.

And if Miko's boss fight isn't one of the most well-synced, I don't know what is.

I liked the boss fight but I agree with the stage, I thought it was pretty bland.

th06 you climb up to where Remilia is, and the background revels the moon
th07 you climb the stairs until you reach the Blossom Tree with Yuyuko by its side
th08 has 2 stages with 2 different backgrounds
th10 you reach Kanako as you hit the lake
th11 you reach Utsuho as you reach the core of old hell
th12 changes the background to a sunset like vista as you reach Byakuren

All of those have interesting ways to change the stage and it impacts you when you have to confront the final boss. TD has nothing, you stay in this bland space for the entirety of it. At least the boss theme was good.

Hey guys, "I don't like it" is not a valid argument for "it is bad". Likewise, "bland" is not only a lazy criticism, but it is also pretty easy to disprove objectively. for TD zun used fewer complex frills, which in character design is a crutch, and instead utilized amazing color and shape control to make each character pop.

I can accept you not liking characters, songs, and really anything from the game. however, your taste does not dictate my taste, nor does it determine the quality of my taste.

Acting as if it does is perhaps the biggest indicator of a selfish, immature mind.

I know, but I felt the need to at least mention it. Even if it is futile, it would feel wrong to let that kind of behavior to go without comment.

> Hey guys, "I don't like it" is not a valid argument for "it is bad".

Of course it is. Good and bad are subjective. If I say something is bad, then yes, it's *because* I don't like it. Maybe someone else loves it, but to me it's bad. Obviously I assume you're intelligent enough to work this out for yourself, to save me the trouble of beginning every single one of my sentences with, "IT IS MY OPINION THAT..."

>> No.9710268

>>9710248
That isn't how objectivty and subjectivity work. When you attack another's subjective opinion ("I like TD") as many in this thread did, you are making an objective argument, not a subjective one. And even if that weren't the case, attacking one's taste just because it does not match yours is immature and causes far more strife than is needed.

If you say 'I hate TD, heres why' and I say 'I liked TD, here is why', then there is nothing more to say on the matter.

Then say "I don't like it", goddamnit. You can try and explain it away all you like, but when I say "This food is terrible", I'm sure as hell not implying that you might enjoy it.

東方 アリス: 47577
東方 咲夜: 58481
東方 フラン: 67045

東方 チルノ: 78197

I guess you can compare them, if that's what you mean, but the result of the comparison is obvious. (Also, it should actually be "東方 (チルノ OR ⑨): 81924", but let's not overcomplicate matters.)

Reading this thread is pretty confusing. Are there really so many people on /jp/ who dislikes second era windows games? I'd like to perhaps chime in with the last point made in >>9707952

Maybe you guys complaining so much just don't love Touhou as much as you used to, causing you to focus on the negative points of each game.

Touhou games degraded in gameplay, music, and characters after 8 while the fandom exploded and a bunch of commercial shit got created. It's basically humanoid MLP now (including in Japan), and has been for a while.

Of course, newfags and casualfags (tertiaries and secondaries in Touhou's case) taking over something cool is only natural. Look at the video game industry. It's not just my nostalgia talking; popular SNES and PSX games are objectively better than modern staples such as Cawadooty and Angry Birds.

The good news is Touhou is getting saturated with white noise. There's too much shit out there, so most newfags are too lazy to obsess about anything other than ancient shit like IOSYS, Crow's Claw, and Bad Apple, in addition to the absolute newest game. And that brings me comfort.

So to anyone who considers themselves part of the Touhou fandom, don't worry. I was the same when I was 16, posting Touhou threads on 4chan, watching Touhou flashes in the school computer lab, collecting Touhou fanart, and memorizing IOSYS lyrics. But then I got older and realized that it was shit except for the porn.

Heartily agreed. There's one, maybe two weak tracks and loads of excellent ones. Suwa Foughten Field is still my favourite endboss theme.

Actually Cirno has more Pixiv-tagged images than any other Touhou, even Reimu, who is in second place.

However, Cirno never gets even in the top 20 in the yearly polls that are done to clarify popularity due to Pixiv numbers being unreliable.

Agreed, he's basically the face of modern Touhoufags (many of which inhabit /jp/). Just some chuuni faggot autismally obsessed with the characters and lore the same way a 16 year old obsesses over Bleach or Hetalia or MLP or whatever kids like these days.

Actually, she doesn't. She's third behind Reimu and Marisa. What she does have is the most popular tag, but this is due to inconsistent tagging for characters with family names.

>clarify popularity due to Pixiv numbers being unreliable

It's funny because the thwiki poll is the biggest outlier here. You can't clarify reality, you just reflect it or not.

This is perhaps one of the most retarded posts I have seen in a while. Those 'commercial works' by which I assume you mean the short stories and comics (as those are the only commercial products to exist), have been around for quite a while (cola), and make up the majority of what makes touhou, touhou.

If you don't like the print works, fine. but don't dare turn this into a newfag/ secondary thing. Zun, like any other creator, has stories he wants to tell. Making short stories and comics is the logical route to take, since he wants to keep the games as they have always been: about the game.

You can make all sorts of arguments about the games themselves, where you think the series has gone downhill, but to attribute that to it's popularity is folly. Zun has a different idea of what touhou should be than you do. Instead of being butthurt about it and lashing out at others that still enjoy, perhaps you should accept that it isn't what you want it to be, and move on.

Or,at the very least, if you are going to make critisisms, perhaps you should ACTUALLY make critisisms, rather than vaguely declaring things are worse without citing any specifics or reasoning.

I think he does, that's why he's put commercial works in quotes to show that when he uses that phrase he's using it in the scope that the original anon used it.

However he is responding to someone who is either a troll or retard since he's bringing up Angry Birds, somehow?

>> No.9712573

>>9712504
Uh, yeah? You do know what commercial means, right? Specificall how commercial products differ from ones offered in the doujin scene.

If you need clarification: The print works are all published through commercially circulated magazines. the games are still (mostly) circulated via indipendent channels.

I'll make it clear that the difference doesnt actually matter, since even if the games were published through another company, they would still be the same. I'm just pointing it out because athat was the only part of my post you felt the need to respond to.

You know, the part that didn't matter.
