When I was in high school, I had a friend who was a year below me go to a Japanese Exchange Student thing. He talked to the Japanese embassy about it, and they told him he needed to know English or Japanese (our main language is Spanish), and that he had to go to a test. If he passed the test, they would give him $2.000 a MONTH, APART from a room and intensive Japanese lessons. They would be giving him around $3.000 a month at 15 years.
Around two-hundred people applied for the test and none of them got past 6/10, he scored a 4.7/10, but a friend from the embassy told us "if you push really hard, they can give you a chance". He started and started pushing the people about how much he wanted to go and eventually after a load of things, he went.
Then, two years later, he said it was oblivion. Maybe because where he came from, but he said that people there are insanely robotic, monotone and they have fun with the slightest thing in the world, and I have to point out, he was catastrophically dull in our country. He says that there was not a single one classmate that was past 5/10, food was expensive and that school was very, very hard. He said that the only thing that made it worth it is that there simply is no crime at all on the streets, and that it is pretty nice to walk around alone, specially at night, because the scenery is gorgeous.
He said that if I'm going to Japan, to bring along some bros, 'cause there, you'll hardly find one.

I think a large part of that is whether people are willing to adapt or not -- most Japanese who grew up outside Japan aren't, and just complain about how they're treated differently without really trying to fit in at all. I work in the video game industry, my company is Japanese (and big). JP employees get paid twice what we earn in Europe in average. (Can very from 1.5x to 2.5x+ depending on the position.)

They have their transportation fees fully covered by the company as well while we don't. Sure we have more paid holidays in here and our working hours are lower, but we get a shitty annual bonus compared to JP who can easily get a full month of salary bonus.

The only advantage we really have is that most of our contracts are permanent, while gaijins at the JP office mostly have temporary based contracts.

It's incredibly safe crime wise, though quakes and eruptions and tsunamis always get mention in the news since 3/11. Everything is crowded and loud. If you need to make a decision involving government get ready to wait weeks or more. If you can speak english fluently you might be able to get a shitty job teaching students who will never get better no matter what. It's got it's pros and cons. I'll concede and agree. I generalized at too far of an extent. But for the field I'm in, the Japanese firms don't seem too interested in offering a comparable compensation as opposed to working for a Canadian and even an American Big Pharma. Physicians practising in Japan also don't make as much as you would expect them to considering the hours that they put in, it's quite sad once you do the math. Many of the researchers who have not provided significant progress also earn an abysmal pay for what they do in comparison to my pay for my efforts.

Nice place to live is relative. How nice of a place do you want? Nice food is also relative. What type of food are you talking about? What you want in life is like choosing to sit in Y/W/J/F. Do I want to live with the basic necessities with sacrifices? Why would I when I have the opportunity to continue in F? An F class flight is $13k when a W flight is $4k to YVR and back. Would I be happier sitting in F or perhaps J or would I choose W or Y? It's quite obvious. And I'm not speaking of American carriers btw, they have no clue what J or F service and quality truly is.

Assuming you do have a chunk of money on hand, why is it even sitting in the bank? Rather than having to work when you're 50 years of age, you could be living off of the money that's being put to work for you. Even with a 0 to low risk diverse portfolio, you could be getting a 2.5-5% return on your money when it's not sitting in the bank. You could just simply sit on an index that will gain and not do anything. If you feel the money is excessive, donate it. Buy some shell corporations and hire the unemployed.

In a lot of ways it kind of sucks.

Summer is so humid it makes you want to kill yourself, rental apartments are shitty and property is expensive, healthy food is really hard to find (i.e. everything premade is unhealthy; no frozen vegetables, no lite anything, etc., so you have to be a good cook to balance your diet), and racists all over the place, ranging from black van crazies to people who are OMG SO IMPRESSED THEY CANNOT FUCKING GET OVER IT when you speak one word of Japanese in front of them.

Points in its favor are that it's safe, people are GENERALLY nice and decent, internet shopping is amazingly convenient (no need for a credit card or anything; you can pay for everything from Amazon orders to the gas bill at any conbini) and in spite of horror stories I've heard, the police are surprisingly nice and helpful (though maybe that's just where I live). Don't listen to these fools, I met a girl who worked in IT but she had to stop because her J-Husband wanted her to raise the family. Also if you are a real girl, expect to be hit on, or how Japanese guys say Nanpa'ed or Hunted...

Correction I must make. If you are real girl expect to be violently raped on train or at train station. Do not tell husband about this though, if you have one, or he will beat you for cheating on him.

It's fucking shit off-topic, moot deleted a board because of shit like that, and it also derailed this thread. Use your "superior" aryan brain or whatever for once in your life.

Discussing physics or philosophy is "off-topic", but they come up in certain threads. It's not like we're not allowed tangents or debates. It's just that certain, perfectly legal tangents and debates are cherry picked to be removed.

>> No.9711608,3 [INTERNAL]

Technically, discussions about Japan are off-topic altogether. It's why moot changed the name from Japan/General to Otaku Culture.

Not that I'm meta whining, as it's nice to have something to talk about other than 2hu feet.

Exactly what I said. Racist beliefs about other countries being inferior, Japan being either #1 in everything or else not which = source of shame, and foreign culture being incomprehensible to Japanese people so what's the point in trying are all deeply, deeply embedded in mainstream society there.

With like 85% of the Japanese people you ever meet, if you spend enough time with them then eventually you are all but guaranteed to hear something come out of their mouth that sounds like it came off Stormfront. Even if it's not directed at you, it'll be something awful about black or Chinese or gay people.

The worst is the little shit, like "oh! you are so good with our language/our eating utensils/our watery shit beer, even though you are a Western barbarian!", or conversations where they direct questions about you to the Japanese person next to you like they're some kind of proxy, that's aren't so outright offensive that you feel like a dick calling them out on it, but seriously starts to grate over time.

>she had to stop because her J-Husband wanted her to raise the family

Your friend is a fool and a doormat, then. Would you do this against your will just because your spouse insisted on it? No, fuck that. That's neither a loving nor an equal partnership.

I realize that this is making my marriage prospects in Japan pretty dim, but fuck that, I'm not going to leave my job to embark on an unpaid career as the 24-hour maid and diaper service just to shield my husband's fragile little ego. Because that's really what it's all about, you know.

Haha, you are confusing Japan with your own country, Korean.

No seriously Japan is nothing like this. They dont like Koreans and Chinese very much, but its nothing compared to the crazy hate those two harbour against Japan.

I live in Tokyo, close to Akihabara. I go to college here, I'm a Junior right now and I came as a Freshman.

Japan is a really cool country. Tokyo is super convenient. Plus you can easily acquire all your /jp/ goods and go to Comiket every year twice. Japanese drinking parties are fun and Japanese girls are really cute.

Honestly Japan is a great place. However, if you can't speak Japanese you will be forced to stick around your gaijin bubble. You will have the same boring gaijin friends and never get to interact with most people unless you learn the language. As a gaijin you will automatically stand out which is a good and bad thing. It makes it easy to get to know people but it is also easy to be lumped together with foreigner stereotypes or misunderstood.

It's what you make of it.

When I meet people who say they somehow can't make friends in Japan (usually giving shitty excuses like only being willing to socialise with people on their Japanese course) it makes me proud that I literally know no non-Japanese people here.

May I ask how you came to Japan? I'm confident in my Japanese, so language is not a problem. I'm considering trying to get into college/university there but I'm afraid of being lumped into a gaijin house or something like that.

Not that guy but I'm going next month on MEXT. I have some international student accommodation for a year, but it's basically my own apartment with kitchen and bathroom and I don't have to interact with anyone I don't want to (they're probably mostly Chinese anyway).

Anyway you don't have to stay in student accommodation. You can rent your own place or find some Japanese girl's place to crash at or whatever.
