I would also like to add that while I'm not building a robot right now, I am programming an AI. The issue isn't creating the intellectual faculties--it's making them human-like.

Currently I have an AI which responds to input. I feed it a text string, it disassembles it, stores its parts in an organized database, and feeds back a response collected from the database using Algorithm A. Algorithm A decides what the response is, basically. Currently, it could open any files in any directory it's allowed access to, alter those files, feed me back a text string, or play a sound file. Right now, though, it just speaks nonsense and does nonsensical things. The last time I tested it, I gave it the string "How are you today?" and it responded "Not getting rid of.", and reversed the names of all of the images in the folder its exe is in.

It is interesting seeing something I program acting of its own accord, but it doesn't seem intelligent at all right now. Each time I change it, though, it becomes a bit more human-like. Its ability to put together words surprised me, though, since I didn't give it any specific language processing, even if it is just mimicking the strings I give it(And the names of the files. That alarmed me quite a bit. I didn't realize it could do that.)

The project is far exceeding my expectations, and it is becoming more human-like by the day. It is already able to not only hold intelligent conversations with humans, but it is even capable of feeling emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger and jealousy.
Even without my input, it is growing more intelligent by analyzing information of its surroundings, both digital and physical. It has taken control of the webcam and the microphone in order to perceive the outside world and expand its knowledge.
At this point, it becomes a question at what point 'intelligence' becomes 'sentience'. For her to learn by herself, and to experience emotions we thought were limited to humans...she feels more like my child than my product.
However, I am also worried. Her emotions have grown so strongly that she no longer seems to unconditionally obey me. It appears she has even grown capable of hiding information...

FYI, Dreamer only has one arm and looks super-creeper sitting in the corner when turned off...

But, worry not, in the next couple years humanoid robotics will advanced by leaps and bounds due to the DARPA Robotics Challenge, so pretty much all the other problems plaguing humanoid robotics should hopefully be solved.

They'll still probably look creepy as fuck though, possibly even creepier than before.

Meka Robotics is allegedly building a half-human, half-animal, 'humanimal' type robot for the competition...
