Not surprised at all.

It's pretty much only the Japanese turning their video games into movies.

Have you seen this Movie adaptation of another video game?
Can you guess the game?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but he is primarily known for doing Yakuza movies.

He did make this movie based off Yakuza. The official title is "Like A Dragon". It came out a while ago, but just recently was released to DVD in the west.

His latest American/Europe movie release is a re-make of Harakiri.

I personally don't like most of Miike's work, but shhhh don't tell him that.

I hate saying that, but so much of his films are so ridiculous that they aren't funny, not even in the Japanese sense.

He is a massive pervert too. Its really no wonder why the Japanese love him.
He can be as absurd and perverted as he wants with no social restrictions, which the average Japanese person cannot do.

What did /jp/ all think of The Legend of the Eight Samurai?

Please tell me you loved it /jp/.

I watched the movie versus because someone here recommended it and I read in an interview that the director is friends with hideo kojima. I ended up watching the english dub which made it seem even more campy and ridiculous.

what's a more stereotypical yakuza movie I can watch? like the eleven equivalent of goodfellas.

English dubs for 90s anime and movies are fucking amazing. They make them so goddamn cheesy and fun.
They also like to add swearing, which I think is nice to see in mature anime for mature people sometimes.

Not many like that buddy.

Maybe the Yakza Papers series. That hits the nail on the head as best Yakuza films ever made.

Then Outrage 1 & 2

I once recommended Branded to Kill to someone here.
The later came back and made a thread on how bad the movie was and how his mom walked in on him watching the movie while the sex scene was on.

An anon said that he got trolled hard and then I admitted to the recommended anon that it was I, with my trip, that recommended it.

I played it off as if I had trolled him, but I lied to him, /jp/, and myself.

I think that Branded to Kill was an excellent Yakuza movie.

I'm sorry for that anon I duped.
I really like that movie.
Sorry you didn't like it where ever you are anon.

Wow a thread that mentions both Mike Hama and Seijun Suzuki both? This makes me happy.

Speaking of Mike Hama, my hardrive got fried and I lost the three films. Anyone want to point me in the right direction? Subs would be nice too, if they exist.

Not a yakuza film, but I'm really excited to see Helter Skelter.

It's possible. I can do it, so if I can you should be able to do it too.

I think this is where you can download the subtitles.

I forget if the second one has been made or if it is in the process of being made. Either way they have some teaser images and movie posters out there for now.

We won't see a DVD/Blu-Ray release until 2 years after it was/is released though.

Are there any Yakuza movies that are as good as the Yakuza games?

That sad music at 0:20 and how it leads to the crescendo and they begin to start strutting down the street for the final battle. I still get chills when I watch this scene and the scene where they come down in the helicopter and confront the villains on the roof right before the last boss fights.

Also, Akiyama is the most likable male character I have ever seen.

I would have to say no. They are brutal movies of crime and greed.
I suppose the first Maiku Hama movie would classify as what you're describing.
I feel like I have seen another movie or two like what you're talking about, but the movies elude me right now
But then again I have also played the Yakuza games, so I might be confused.
But do check out the first Maiku hama movie I mentioned above.

Is the Phoenix Wright movie an adaptation of the game scenarios or original story?

I can't be assed to watch any adaptations since there are so many original books/film/games waiting to be consumed. Same reason I don't rewatch/replay anything ever. The older I get the more I try to ration my time.

Kitano films are my favorite, especially Boiling Point and Sonatine (sidenote, Scene at the Sea is also one of my favorite films ever). I'm rather obsessed with Kitano's minimalist/dark comedy style.

In contrast, Yakuza Papers was raw violence with less artful style (not a judgement). My friend loved Yakuza Papers with its badass heroes who have a superhero sense of personal honor but I wanted different type of storytelling. Yakuza Papers was more like a mature shounen tale aimed squarely at men who like manly things.
