Plan 9 supports a pretty impressive range of hardware, actually. Though whether it supports bzip archives, I'm not too sure.

I can play Touhou at about 40-50 FPS in Windows, on my 10 year old computer.
I can play Touhou at 60 FPS in Linux, on my 10 year old computer.
Woxxy can play Touhou at 10 FPS in OS X, on his 1 year old MacBook.

Does Windows even support any architecture besides x86/x64? Because that's a huge dealbreaker to a lot of people.

Of course, those people are all nerds, so you can forget about them to support your argument.

> The games your customers want (e.g. World of Warcraft)

This bit always gets me. Not only is World of Warcraft a pretty poor choice of game, but it's also widely touted as one of the games that runs perfectly in Wine, using open source re-implementations of Windows software, with better hardware management and less cruft in the operating system proper.
They should have put Hearts. Businessmen love Hearts.

My computer sounds like it's going to explode whenever I do this, probably due to the massive amount of read/writes. It also takes forever, because there are so many files (with a short but built-up gap between each GET). I seriously wish the Debian guys would write larger Diffs than having about five a day. I don't want to have to download hundreds of files every time I update, especially when they all have to be checked, compared and concatenated. And that's just fetching the metadata--an actual apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade takes way longer since the files are larger.

Why is windows bothering to compete with linux? Shouldn't they be writing something like this up about macs?

Pretty much everyone who uses linux uses it because they like to program or for ethical reasons. The average person would never choose linux over windows because they don't give a shit.

This is seriously why I think people should be taught "su" instead of "sudo". Not only is "sudo" a non-POSIX piece of software, but it's superfluous for 99% of tasks, "su -c" does exactly the same thing. Yet another example of GNU peddling some shortcut so people get addicted to it.

It's great, but you need to understand it's a completely different operating system. Prepare for some paradigm shifts. Also, the variance in Linux distributions and desktop environments is often as huge as going from, say, Windows to OS X.

Download a Ubuntu Live CD/USB. You put it in your computer and reboot, you have a Ubuntu Linux test environment to play around in (though you can't save anything, it's pretty much just for demonstration purposes). It may be a little slow since it all has to run from RAM, so you can also try Wubi, which installs a virtual hard drive partition of Ubuntu as though it was a regular piece of Windows software (and you can uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs).
I say Ubuntu because it's good for beginners, adequately pretty and customizable, and still has the full power of Linux at your disposal. Don't listen to the naysayers who insist it isn't elite enough.

Having two big (and possibly related) problems in Debian at the moment:

If I extract an archive with Japanese characters (using 7z, unrar, or unzip) it names it Latin-1 gibberish.
In the Transmission Web Ilient, there are random HTML character codes (Blah_01mkv)

My locale is en_GB.UTF-8 and I have changed *nothing* besides frequently upgrading.
What could be the problem?

Then there is the prohibition of realistically depicting sex with an animal. The law does not care whether the animal wanted sex. I've read that male dolphins try to have sex with humans, and female apes sollicit sex from humans. What is wrong with giving them what they want, if that's what turns you on, or even just to gratify them?

But this law is not concerned with protecting animals, since it does not care whether the animal really had sex, or really existed at all. It only panders to the prejudice of censors.

A parrot once had sex with me. I did not recognize the act as sex until it was explained to me afterward, but being stroked by his soft feathers was so pleasurable that I yearn for another chance. I have a photo of that act ; should I go to prison for it?

Perhaps I am spared because this photo isn't "disgusting", but "disgusting" is a subjective matter; we must not imprison people merely because someone feels disgusted. I find the sight of wounds disgusting; fortunately surgeons do not. Maybe there is someone who considers it disgusting for a parrot to have sex with a human. Or for a dolphin or tiger to have sex with a human. So what? Others feel that all sex is disgusting.

Ease of use, software compatibility > Any benefits of (GNU+) Loonix.

I installed Debian, fedora, and mint before. Tell you what, finding an "alternative" to all the software I want, and generally just being a pain in the ass to do everything, is not fun.

Using shells like openbox, is much faster a very lightweight, and the customization is by far much superior. But I don't have a single ed making damn reason to use loonix over windows. To tell you the truth, the system files are absolutely horrible to navigate, and I would personally rather just use an installer, and have the file go to an easy to find place. Rather than type in sudo apt-get installman for everything.

If there's honestly no alternative to what you want, then it's kind of a given that anything else will be inferior. I'm the same as you but in reverse--I wanted a proper UNIX shell with all the POSIX tools, and Windows didn't have that (I think now it has some emulation called PowerShell).

If you're a gamer or a graphic designer, Linux simply isn't for you. At least, not yet.
