How strong is the overlap between the otaku and the stereotypical gambler in japan?

I see a lot of media about gambling and yakuza aimed at the otaku, yet I don't know if that's due to any overlap or just the ability to create stories which enthrall using such a topic. Thinking hard about it I've seen Pachinko machines with figs as prizes in my own city, yet I don't know if this is also a truth in Japan.

The otaku could conceivably lend themselves to such an easy yet high-risk way of earning money, I'd assume but that is also the case for the vast majority of society.

So what are you getting at?

I'm just wondering how many otaku get in trouble with gambling debt, or how deep yakuza involvement is in stuff like questionably legal JAV/doujin stores, etc.

I'm aware that there's protection being placed on uncensored JAV VHS joints, I'm just wondering what the involvement actually is. Of course there's an obvious link between yakuza and gambling which is why I'm starting it there.

Interesting question.

I don't know if anyone on /jp/ can do more than speculate, but it's conceivable that if 1) the gambling otaku was playing a game that was not rigged and 2) the game followed some kind of payout schedule (the way, say, a slot machine does) perhaps the mathematical genius might find a way to beat the system.

Of course, that's the lie that every gambler tells himself. That there's a system to beat when there really isn't... but maybe if you had a group of gamblers with capital to throw at a particular system until it paid out, and then they split the profits between themselves and repeated the process.

The payout would have to follow an algorithm and I can't imagine that any sensible gambling game would do that, or it would be too easy to break it.

Given the fact that most casinos at least have something resembling a house advantage this would be pretty difficult. I'd imagine since most otaku exhibit traits resembling that of autistics in that they're completely obsessed by one topic that there's conceivably a few dedicated to gambling and systems thereof but even then consistently winning is almost impossible.

Most otaku in Japan are not skilled.

It's not like the west where so called 'geeks' will have technical computer experience, except maybe computer ota. This is why online anime and game resources in Japan are often so poor and basic.

Many otaku will gamble to get extra money just like anybody.

Where did you get that idea from?
Otakus aren't always NEETs or poor.
