Yes it is weird. It's one thing if you just like visiting pubs and decide sporadically to pull out a book while you're there and read. It'd be eccentric for sure but if you were truly an eccentric person you wouldn't think it odd because you'd just be in your own little world. If you know it's weird and do it anyways for some bizarre sense of novelty then you're dangerously close to be a stereotypical hipster.

This thread inspired me to start reading again. I started with Slaughterhouse-Five. It was okay.

But more importantly, whenever someone whines about fanservice now, I'm just going to quote this at him:

>Gluck led the way to a building that he thought might contain the kitchen, and he opened the sliding doors in its side. There wasn't a kitchen in there, though. There was a dressing room adjacent to a communal shower, and there was a lot of steam. In the steam were about thirty teen-age girls with no clothes on. They were German refugees from Breslau, which had been tremendously bombed. They had just arrived in Dresden, too. Dresden was jammed with refugees.
>There those girls were with all their private parts bare, for anybody to see. And there in the doorway were Gluck and Derby and Pilgrim-the childish soldier and the poor old high school teacher and the clown in his toga and silver shoes-staring. The girls screamed. They covered themselves with their hands and turned their backs and so on, and made themselves utterly beautiful.
>Werner Gluck, who had never seen a naked woman before, closed the door. Bill had never seen one, either. It was nothing new to Derby.

Even critically acclaimed novels find time to fit a bath scene with a bunch of teenage girls in, so why would you criticize it in anime or whatever?

Khan Academy isn't a book, nerd.

Free web resources (currently) pale in comparison to a well-written textbook. These are just volunteers who know a little about something, but they're usually not very qualified or good at teaching. A textbook is written by one or more experts, properly copy-edited, typeset, and fact-checked. Of course textbooks make mistakes too, but we really need to wean people off Wikipedia and Khan Academy and the like, and get them back into reading textbooks. Crowdsourcing is a great idea, but it's currently not an adequate replacement for proper learning materials.
