What do you guys think about Aspect Ratios? And which do you prefer?

Personally, the widescreen bullshit always looked odd to me, though I can see its merits.

So looking "odd" is reason enough for you to avoid picking the obviously better choice? I guess some people enjoy having the ends of their screens cut off, but it makes no sense to me. I can't see how anyone would willingly choose a narrower field of view.

Though I like widescreen but there are title where they show the character way too close to the screen covering most of game screen majority of the time or character still popping in and out while talking when there space for 4-6 character standing that annoying me to no end.

>> No.9642859

I don't mind 4:3, but it's pretty nice when a VN is widescreen. Especially for VNs with great artwork. If it includes scenery porn, it'd be a waste not to use widescreen.

The aspect ratio fullscreen mode in rUGP 5.8+ makes me hard.

Although fairly speaking in the only actual 5.8 game I have installed (Chronicles 01's window says 5.8 but the About says 5.9) it looks like shit like the zoom settings always have.

>>9642814
You know as much as (military) FPS should be one of the genres that benefits from widescreen, since it became obligatory it's mostly just meant cut down vertical field of view, especially with consolization.

For fighting games it's honestly a bit of a pain in the ass that hurt games up until now and I don't see a lot of value in it for racing games or some other genres.

I usually play windowed mode at whatever the default resolution/aspect ratio is.

That goes for almost every game I play because ADD. I like being able to do many things at once, although when I'm reading a VN or watching anime my attention is on that particular thing for the time I'm engaging with it.

I used to experiment with full screen and VNs looked like such shit that way. Newer games obviously don't suffer from this as much, but I'm too used to windowed mode to try anything else.

>> No.9643208

In my case, the reason 4:3 looks more natural is exactly the same. I keep it windowed most of the time and I like it when it uses up less space.

>I guess some people enjoy having the ends of their screens cut off
That's not how it works. Rather than having the left and right edge cut off, the top and bottom edges are cut off. See picture for example. Keep in mind that, for example, the 'widescreen' version of 1280x960 is 1280x720, and the 'widescreen' version of 1600x1200 is 1600x900. You're not 'expanding the screen horizontally', you're 'shrinking the screen vertically'.

Myself, I'm a real 4:3 guy, and I don't like the whole 'widescreen' trend. A 4:3 screen is much easier to focus on (whereas with the 16:9 the edges of your screen are out of focus), and, from my experience, is also much easier to design for (making game interfaces and the like; due to the relative sizes of things, 4:3 allows for more room to put elements in, and in 4:3 the player will easily see everything without having to focus on a specific spot). I make games myself, and even to this day, they are always 4:3.

I recall a rumor saying that the reason widescreen became such a thing was because the lcd screens were cheaper to make for whatever reason. Seems CAPITALISM enough to me.

Widescreen is ok, but with a window manager that can tile windows into left part and right part. At least for reading or typing. There's a limit on how wide a normal human eye can focus on.

I tend to let my mind drift when playing on Auto, too. I definitely read less actively. It's kinda nice to sit back and let the game turn the pages for you, but if I can't remember what I just read then it sorta defeats the purpose.
