What's the definitive version of 'Touhoumon'?

I know of Puppet Play and World Link. Puppet Play seemed more coherent, and World Link seemed like it had a bunch of extra and unfinished shit on it.

Should I just stick to Puppet Play or has World Link got all it's extra stuff sorted out by now?

There is no "definitive" version, since there are different modders each making their own schtick. What are you looking for? Balanced? Insanely difficult? Similar to pokemon or different? In the more recent editions they completely changed typing.

Whoops, sorry, I'm actually not playing that. I forgot I opted for the 1.812 FireRed version that had all the unofficial patches added in.

1.8 with the patches you want or 1.8 enhanced if you're unable to play it in japanese.

I can't really recommend World Link and the (completed) Gensokyo Scenario though. Compared to 1.8 it's just much lower quality: A lot of sprites look terrible and the music consists mostly of random (vocal) songs inserted into the game.

I played a Fire Red Hack three or four years ago. Now I'd like to try a recent edition and had been eying Emerald, but the 1.8 ones seem incomplete at the moment. Has Fire Red hack been changed so thoroughly to warrant another go, or should I try an Emerald one first? Are the starters in Fire Red still Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya? In the Emerald one I downloaded the starters were Sanae, Alice, and Reisen.

What exactly is the World Link/Gensokyo Scenerio? Do they completely alter the map/story/characters?

Because I already wasted enough time doing them every generation, and it goes against the feel of making bonds with your pokemon, kinda opposite of the Nuzlocke concept. Instead of accepting and raising your caught Touhou with love and care, you now mechanically figure out if they're good enough if if not (vast majority of the time) you delete them from existence ;_; It encourages murder!

Ideologically EV/IV are supposed to make Pokemon feel unique, but it feels pointless because on the competitive scene everyone has near perfect for them (most likely perfect due to easy hacks) so you need to put in extra wasted time or cheat to stay on par, and it's doesn't add strategy at all.

So it's either waste time and deleting countless Pokemon for each one you're interested in using, or feel that your efforts to lovingly raise your own ultimate pokemon is in vain since it'll never actually be as good as one with perfect EVs.

Well, you do have a point there. However, EVs (or the lack thereof) do not make a particularly large difference because your Pokemon will also more than likely have maximum EVs by the end of its journey. They might not be properly attributed, but if you use berries, or even if you don't, it's not impossible to overcome a superior opponent. IVs could potentially create a chasm of 31 stat points, but a situation of 0 vs 31 is very rare. 10-20 differences aren't so bad. You can always win, with the right moveset and proper strategizing. And luck.

Nobody's like that, actually. It's pretty much common sense that you don't need any special training to beat the main game (unless maybe you're playing a hard mode hack), and people who say otherwise are either trolling you or being stupid.
Even if you want to go competitive at some point, nobody is forcing you to EV train or to breed a billion eggs looking for good IVs, but you might lose a lot of speed matches if you don't do that.

In terms of stats, no. The types are only important when using care center for breeding. Er...actually, Reason is essentially the psychic type of the game, though there are considerably a lot less touhous of that nature. You'll probably notice a lot of the type edits are similar to original ones. Like Dream being Fighting and Wind being Electric. One thing I'm really glad about is that Poison (or Miasma) finally isn't the worst type ever anymore, gaining some resistances and another strength (it actually makes early game Yamames kind of frightening).

>>9626346
If you want ridiculously difficulty, try looking for Insane version and Extra version. It edits the maps, but there's a good chance you'll lose interest before getting to enjoy them (plus Extra only has up to 2 gyms completed).

Another World and World Link also have their maps changed, but the games are pretty...lackluster and kind of end up one big clusterfuck.

Your best bets for a decent game are probably Gensokyo Scenario (the Japanese hack which Another World is based off of, incomplete but marvelously well done taking place in Gensokyo) or Touhoumon Blue, which isn't exactly a complete map edit or anything, but gets rid of all the stupid forced HM required areas. You can literally run around the world in just a few hours without beating a single gym leader or cutting a single tree. It also has some original touhou evolutions of it's own (headcrab Pyonta evolving into hard gay will always be my favorite).

Well, I will say that a few of the touhous that were in the Psychic type originally became Heart types, like Reisen who was mentioned earlier, Reason generally seems to cover most of the moves Psychic used to have. Also, if you look at the strength/weakness chart, it's typing is actually pretty close to how Psychic originally was (strong against Dream/Fighting and Miasma/Poison, while weak to Ghost and Dark).

Heart is kind of an odd type in my opinion, since it seems to take a few of the Normal type moves that Flying and Beast types hadn't taken in the update, like Headbutt for example. It also has a few original moves of it's own for good measure, like Wanting which if I remember is the Heart version of Theif. I guess it was really just made for added balancing.

So, for comparison, I much prefer Puppet Play Enhanced these days. One for the new sprites, as posted by >>9631199 (so damn cute), and also because of the new typing, which spices things up quite nicely.

Blue also has new sprites, but still uses the old typing.

World Link is supposedly the longest Touhou hack, but everything after vanilla content is horribly hackish (and the person who made it cannot into English, truly nightmarish).

Emerald X was, well, quite unfair. I rage-quit when I came upon my rival in a patch of grass, and he had an evolved level ~30 Touhou with dark/ghost typing (what the fuck, haven't seen a better defensive typing yet) that could literally wipe the floor with my whole party, which was around level 18-20. After you do that, you go to the Celadon apartment and talk to the Gamefreaks crew, and they'll hand you a certificate and a ferry pass, and you can go to a special island where you can buy every item in the game, learn or delete moves, reset your Touhoumons' level and EVs, and EV train. "Emerald X" was probably Scarlet Emerald from what you said. It's actually kind of funny since the creator lowered the grindfest from his previous hack, Touhoumon Extra for it. All and all, I wouldn't say it's too bad from how far I played, I even enjoyed some of it due to most trainers and gym leaders having decent Pokemon and movesets. The only real stopping point at the Mauville gym and even the creator himself is aware of it as he mentions it in the readme that used to be on his personal mediafire link.

>> No.9637056

>>9636918

Puppet Play (or Puppet Play Enhanced for the english version) is kind of like the main Touhoumon, following the Japanese 1.5x/1.8x patches. This one takes place in Kanto first (story is just like Fire Red), has new types like Reason, Illusion, Dream, Faith, etc, and the evolution system is much more flexible. Most of the Touhou's have only one stage of evolution, but different forms/styles according to what you do: Let it evolve with levels or use specific heart stones/rainbow shard after getting the National Dex. For example, you can let Chibi Patchouli evolve into a Reason type Patchouli or use different Heart Stones to let it evolve into a Wind/Earth type Defense Tank DPatchouli or a Fire/Water type Offense Glasscannon APatchouli. You can even get an Offensive Sakuya or a Helper/Support Sakuya. In the Puppet Play Enhanced version, you can switch between all the evolutions as you see fit using Heart Stones, apparently. Also the Touhous are really well balanced. This game is the most recent one and it is receiving regular monthly updates.

Another World is based off the incomplete Japanese Gensokyo Scenario. This one takes place all around Gensokyo and Kanto. It follows the regular pokemon types and the evolutions are somewhat more linear like an average pokemon game: the touhous have multiple evolution stages (Chibi, Normal, EX, Last Word, Dark, Final, etc...) and the top tier evolutions require trading and other requirements. (You can always trade with yourself). However, this game is also known to be the buggiest, including music randomly stopping/restarting and the sprites sometimes screwing up. This game is halted/finished and receives no more updates.

>> No.9637058

>>9637056

World Link is more similar to Another World in terms of Touhous/evolutions/types/gameplay but follows the Emerald pokemon series as well as having the same pokemon story. It contains three regions and receives occasional updates.

tl;dr

Puppet Play Enhanced is Fire Red story, regularly updated, well balanced, new and different types, simple/flexible/innovative evolution system, and most well polished.

Another World is Gensokyo/Fire Red story, receives no more updates, linear evolutions with emphasis on hard to get top tier forms, same types as regular pokemon, gimmicky and buggiest Touhoumon.

World Link is Emerald story, occasionally updated, linear evolutions with emphasis on hard to get top tier forms, same types as regular pokemon, and gimmicky.

It is up to personal preference, people basically enjoy PPE because it is more consistent/polished/balanced/innovative but Another World and World Link for the story/length/hard to get evolutions and stuff. Personally I'm going to finish PPE before playing the other two.

I could be wrong on many things, I just started playing Touhoumon yesterday.

>> No.9637285

>>9637058
Nah, you explained things pretty well.

To add to that Touhoumon 1.812 Enhanced also had altered battle music from the original Japanese version. This is actually somewhat frustrating during a gym battle where the track the creator chose takes a while to start up and you can wipe out about half the leader's team depending on who you're fighting.

Also, as for Another World, if I remember correctly the creator took the liberty to alter the original game again. This time upping the difficulty of already slightly challenging "boss fights" from the original Gensokyo Scenario into grindfests/get lucky to win scenarios. I don't understand why so many Touhoumon romhackers feel that the very first gym leader/boss in the game *must* have an evolved touhou in their party when you have little to no means be beat them at that point.

NO NO NO DON'T DO THIS.

If you use save states, you will NOT be able to continue the game after beating the first elite 4 or the leagues. There are always extra regions and I think all three of the games have content until all the way to level 100.

The reason you cannot continue is that usually, after beating the elite 4, there are credits that play and the game restarts while saving your game post-elite 4. Using save states will screw this up, and you will find yourself eternally stuck like I was when I played the original Fire Red with the save game shit broken. (It's the same game so I'm sure it will happen)

To fix the save problem, BEFORE you boot up the Touhoumon rom, go to options and set these settings up:

Real Time Clock on (options - emulator - Real Time Clock)
Save type to Flash 128 kb (options - emulator - save type - flash 128kb)

Also note that the best version to run Touhoumon is on VBA 1.7.2 and VBA Link 1.7.3 if you want to use link.

has to be done on every Touhoumon because of compatibility if you play on VBA. If you go on the touhoumon blog/website it's written down on every patch post and it's also written on the README files you get if you actually read them.

It depends on what you see as "good."

CSanae, when evolved, has sky high defense and a typing which walls Fire, Wind, Heart and Water, all of which are very common types. The problem with her is that she's weak to Beast, so getting her past early game is quite the challenge. She is very rewarding if you can brave the beginning.

CAlice is a bulky Special Attacker. She can sponge neutral hits fairly well, but Reason is not a very good Defensive typing (a minor inconvinience).

CReisen has been discussed. She has low defensive stats, but her incredible defensive typing in Heart compensates for this. She is your Special Sweeper, and she does a pretty good job at it too.

How much typing actually matters in Puppet Play? I was looking at the wiki and pondering what team I would go with. I'd really like to use my favorites but that would mean I have many touhous with same type, like Reason for example.

>> No.9639277

I like Pokémon, but the Touhou setting doesn't seem like it'd mix well with Pokemon mechanics.

In Pokémon, the typing advantages and disadvantages are generally intuitive and the details are taught through trial and error. Most of the time, you can guess the typing of a Pokémon you're never seen before just by glancing at its sprite. Whether or not a particular Pokémon has evolved or will evolve can usually also be guessed.

With touhous, none of this really applies.

>> No.9639304

What you just described are not 'mechanics', it is knowledge gained through trial and error. Not only does it not apply to newer pokemon games because they become so ridiculous that you can't guess the types anymore, but it can also be compensated as easily by trial and error like you described or having a wiki page on. Just treat it like a new game you have to learn and it is pretty negligible, I'm sure.

Not only that, but the Touhoumons based on the 1.8x patches are surprisingly balanced, maybe more so than pokemon itself. Overall stat numbers are well balanced except for legendaries that don't tend to be that far off either, and psychic is no longer there as the 'rape most types except like one or two' solution, replaced by shinto/reason/heart/dream and other types that balance out the strengths/weaknesses of most types in the game.

I think Touhoumon did a very good job at crossing the pokemon mechanics over. Moveset balance at a competitive level would probably not apply to most of us and the stones, when abused/exploited might be bad, does a wonderful job at keeping the different natures and canon/fanon personalities of Touhous integrated in the game.

Just use the touhous you like the best.

I beat the elite four with a 68 Reisen, 51 Yuugi, 39 Remilia, 44 Momiji, 47 Yorihime, and a 40 Meiling. The only one being useful was Reisen, and Yuugi for the first one, but it didn't matter. Used more revives and full restores, but I got through it no problem.

you can mix and match moves between forms as you please, and many forms have a move that others don't learn (speed utsuho learns agility and aeroblast while attack doesn't for example), once stone evos are open you're pretty much free to break the game and you probably have to with that silly trainer gauntlet on mt silver (only thing i find remotely interesting about the postgame content but i don't want to play through kanto and johto just to access it boohoo)
to each their own but it eliminates the pros and cons of certain forms when you can just get the best moves from all of them and go to the one with the best sweeping potential

as for why to play em.. well it's emerald and not fire red so it's not just kanto again, you can use evolutionary stones before you get the national dex (and are encouraged to do so, but no sliding), the gyms are different compared to 1.8 fr (roxanne uses beast types and brawly uses dream types, for examples), you can actually get advent forms without jumping through fifty flaming hoops.. so on so forth

>>9639271
you can feel free to use like 4-5 favorites in a team no sweat. just avoid compounded weaknesses to steel/ghost/dark/reason and you're fine, and even if you have weaknesses to that just slap one or two other chars on your team that counter those types and abuse swap mode like most people do.

Wow, I guess I leveled my Reisen like mad then. Guy who's been posting a few times with a 70 Reisen here, I've had her outleveling every gym leader by 10+ besides brock and the elite four. About equal levels for them.

Then again, I tend to always supercharge one pokemon to be drastically higher than my rest in every pokemon game I've played. So it's no real surprise. For the elite four I focused on evening out my levels a bit.

If I'm not mistaken, there is an auto egg hatcher npc on Four Island (or left of Mauville) which makes this tons easier.

My savestates just vanished for like the 3rd time on 1.8 EE. I think i'm going to stick to computer emulating now, but I want to give the Emerald version a go for something new. How is it?

Depends on what version you are playing.

I think I'll write a copypaste for future Touhoumon threads, outlining it, tl;dr of most of the popular hacks and links and shit, need to know stuff, etc

I don't know if any Touhoumon threads got recognition before but this thread wins. We should start coming up with ideas for runs instead of just nuzlocke runs, like that guy with a full Meiling team rofl

Back to whatever forum you came from, please.

Can anyone tell me hows the post game content in like enhanced, emerald and stuff

Enhanced has (supposedly boring?) Johto and a 12 or so battle-long gauntlet for Red on Mt. Silver so you can actually do something with all the stone evolutions you unlocked by getting the National dex.

Emerald's rather lacking compared to Enhanced since most of its postgame content only serves to speed up the min-maxing process (EV trainers, Rare Candy vendor) since I was intending for the Frontier to be done approximately a few forevers ago, but there's still Steven and the gym leader rematches.

Another World and World Link has stuff up to like higher levels right
Fuck I wish those two were based on 1.8 patches

Yeah, but they're also really bad hacks from a gameplay standpoint. If your favorite character doesn't have a Last Word form then you may as well give up on using them, and late/endgame mostly just degrades to Toxic stalling due to defensive stats growing too high to break down with regular attacks in reasonable timeframes.

a copypaste would be awesome

東方人形劇 Touhou Puppet Play (ro. Touhou Ningyougeki) is a modification of Pocket Monsters FireRed, replacing most of the 386 Pokemon with as many Touhou characters as possible. Several English variants have been released with the same premise, but differ in various ways from the original in terms of locations, levels, obtainable Touhoumon, and other details.

Question, can you patch the unofficial patches that come with PP to the Emerald version? I'd rather suck a cock then walk through caves again.

But thanks anyway.

Copypaste looks relatively fine but I wouldn't call Aichiya's port "slightly" edited 1.8 considering the stuff that was added to it.
