Regarding the yukkuri, on the one hand they can be very cute in some circumstances.

However, I cannot fault people who carry out campaigns of extermination against them: after all, this isn't any worse than our policy of unrestricted extermination against other lower life forms that disgust or inconvenience us. Aside from their capability for speech, most stories show them as having less intelligence than pigs or cattle. The ability to visually recognize members of the same herd; the ability to recognize different types of threats and respond to them in different manners; the ability to moderate their reproduction in times of scarce resources; yukkuri are slightly below the level of insects.

I would compare them to dogs. In the distant past, some dogs humbled themselves before humanity. We accepted them as our pets, companions, and valued servants. Over the generations we bred them to serve us, to the point where we no longer even consider them the same type of animal as their wilder cousins. I've always been fascinated by the idea of yukkuri abuse and why it's so common. If something enters my home against my will -- whether an insect, a yukkuri, or even a human being -- then I have the right to use lethal force to end its existence as long as it is not trying to leave.
