I'm actually kind of scared to do this.. I'd love to, because I'm lonely and I think a sure friendship with a pen-pal would be very fulfilling.

Do Japanese people lighten up once they get out of Japan or do they still stay pretty uptight about the whole anti-drug thing?

I live in California so I have a medical card and I grow in my backyard. I know the laws are pretty harsh in Japan and they have crazy exaggerated ideas of what drugs are like (this picture for example)

There are actually drug enthusiasts in Japan, though of course when it comes to things illegal over there it's not as big. Mainly people abuse prescription medication but there are sellers of marijuana if you look hard enough.

I didn't plan to, but since it's legal there's no need to hide it here. If they ever visited me then they would just see it or smell it since they're in plain sight and planted right in middle of my backyard. Figured a conversation would be unavoidable the second they looked outside the house.

I mention hiking or other outdoor activities. It seems to work well.

The good part about those hobbies is that they don't involve other people so you don't need to have friends and it appeals to one of the attractive stereotypes that they have of westerners. From my experience with talking to non-english speakers they typically seem to have two stereotypes in their head that they find attractive when they think of westerners, specifically Americans. Either the charismatic and social guy with tons of friends who lives in a big city or the "mysterious and deep" lone wanderer who spends a lot of time walking through the forest and thinking.

It's very easy to be like the second stereotype. Just walk outside and act a bit like the guy from Twilight. The best part is that the less friends you have the better.

Of course this doesn't work at all if you're ugly, so start lifting.

The problem with Japanese people is that you never know what's on their mind. They always say something nice, but they're thinking something completely different. It's just how their culture works. Actually that's probably why they have so much trouble understanding the concept of sarcasm. Everything they say is already disingenuous so sarcasm is practically indistinguishable to them from regular conversation.

Americans can be rude as hell, but they're honest.
