Are games like 999, Infinite Space and Hotel Dusk considered Visual Novels?

At least it feels like most of them were meant to be.
The gameplay gimmicks in each one of them look more like a way to show off the touchscreen capabilities of the DS than to actually function as games focused solely on gameplay.

Their entries on vndb sound like enough proof to me that they are Visual Novels.
What do you think /jp/?

999 and Infinite Space? yes
Hotel Dusk? maybe

>> No.9564916

Dunno about the others, but Infinite Space is a space combat game with a branching plot.
Just because something has a story and a simple interface doesn't mean it is a visual novel.
P.S: PLAY INFINITE SPACE IT IS FUCKING GOOD.

>> No.9564927

999 is pretty much a VN with point-and-click adventure minigames thrown in every now and then.

Hotel Dusk is an adventure game, not a VN, and I don't see how its gameplay is "gimmicky."

Never played Infinite Space.

How is it not gimmicky man? Look at the puzzles.
Fit key in a keyhole? Lift a cabinet with a crowbar?
Seriously dude.

Infinite Space is pretty much what would be a Visual Novel of Legend of The Galactic Heroes. Go play it.

>>9564935
Because the core of Hotel Dusk's gameplay is that of a traditional point-and-click adventure game, not the DS-specific touches (which aren't even altogether gimmicky, it's called using a platform's abilities).

>999

Adventure game.

>Infinite Space

RPG with space simulation and real time strategy elements.

>Hotel Dusk

Adventure game.

Learn your game genres please. It's 2012. I shouldn't have to educate people on this.

While we're on the subject, I have to say I'm warmly waiting for the 999 sequel on 3DS.

We have had lots of 999 threads here (and Phoenix Wright), but I don't think we've had any about the other two. I know /m/ loves Infinite Space.

Yeah, it seems a lot more complex and interesting. The whole betray/cooperate system looks great, and I want to see their explanation for ALICE being there and Clover's reaction to being there for the third time, and whether she'll tell everyone from the get go why everyone is there in the first place. I hope they won't pull the time travel bullshit again, it wouldn't make sense since there was only one timeline where Clover survived, right? Maybe I'm overthinking this.

I'm not going to buy a 3DS for it though, might just steal it off some nerd.

hurr hurr anything with a lot of words is a visual novel. all these words make my head hurt, mommy.

I mean I guess you might say they have Visual Novel elements? Persona 3 and Persona 4 for example have what you'd call Visual Novel elements.

I really wish Infinite Space had combat better than "hit back and fire from outside the enemies range" or "enter the enemies range with dodge on then use barrage twice" or "go to the edge of the screen and launch 150 fighters". There's like one fight total preventing each of those from being a near-universal solution?

If we use gameplay quality to determine whether something is a game or a VN, Infinite Space is definitely a VN. Even Aselia and Koihime have better "combat".

To be honest, I probbably wouldn't have minded the battle system so much if it'd been on the PS3 or something with real snazzy graphics and audio. The DS just doesn't do it justice.

Ar Tonelico is on vndb too but it's hardly a VN. The only one out of those three that are VNs is 999.
