I think rustle's pretty bad about it actually? I think working in color makes it appear more diverse than it really is. I mean, like at any of the character's faces. Other than skin tone and hairstyle, do they have differently shaped mouths, nose, or eyes? (actually sometimes he draws more detailed noses, but on solo drawings it seems.) I don't know him that much so you tell me.


Sameface isn't really a bad thing, I don't know why people make a huge deal out of artists who churn out huge numbers of pages each month draw in a simple style.

I mean if you want variation, look at Nobuyuki Fukumoto, the kaiji guy, who gives his characters very different facial structure, but he's working in a cartoonish, exaggerated style. Bishoujo artists are intensesly focused on providing an otaku ideal, so it makes sense the artist sticks to one type. Otaku tend to want a specific ideal of beauty; I mean, in slight variances in body type or skin tone are nearly considered niche fetishes.

they are in the sense that they don't vary the expressions or shape of mouth eyes and nose, but neither are very creative in any other area as well. takeuchi takashi, by contrast, has improved a lot, but I think much of that has to do, like most artists in this genre, with creativity of costume design, color, etc. the particular bishoujo/Anime/whatever style puts a lot of restrictions on body type and facial features that characters are allowed to have, so I think a good artists in these fields is one who is creative within those restrictions.

F/SN was written with the Grail War as a clear premise, so it was more structured and ended up at times focusing on the battles more than developing the story—Tsukihime, on the other hand, didn't have as developed a premise, so the focus was on developing the story past Shiki just being some guy with magic eyes. Or something like that, at least.
