Things you may not know:
- You can pay your bills
- You can have your online orders sent to them to pick up, rather than your own home. (no dealing with "wasn't home, will deliver later" slips)
- You can pay for your online orders there (no need for credit cards)
- You can register for exams from them

Quit your whining about the heat. Those little fans they give out are heavenly, and Osaka has been consistently ten degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler than my city in Missouri for the past several weeks. I would have given a lot to be back in Japan this summer.

Besides, if you want to walk around see cool shit while ignoring the heat, just stay underground. The underground around Umeda is air-conditioned unless my memory is really poor, and several of the large shopping buildings have entrances in the underground (in addition to the underground just having its own stores). You can go shopping all day without ever seeing the sun.

Like, I guess it might make sense in some ways, but I wouldn't have guessed that a convenience store would be a place where you could buy laundry detergent. I was trying to think of a place like Walmart that might have an aisle dedicated to it, but wasn't coming up with anything. I've been all over North America (Canada and Mexico included), and certain areas of Europe, including England, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

While the real beauty of the European countries lies in its rustic rural areas, it's fascinating seeing the sharp contrast between the majority of the muddy suburban areas a lot of the countries there have.
The US is the same, with its expansive suburban areas, that are mostly very small and not very well kept. It's brand stores and super shopping centers litter the entirety of the country, while the necessity of an automobile to get from place to place seems to be detrimental to the overall aesthetic. Canada (Toronto, and the Michigan/Canada border specificall) is relatively the same, but the population is relatively sparse. For some reason, it reminded me of England... with its subtle but distanced population.

Both continents have a certain amount of splendor in its cities, and it varies from city to city, as does the rest of the world.

But there's one thing Japan that I will always admire. The compartmentalization of its country is absolutely magnificent. This lack of space has created a very polite, and society-conscious attitude amongst its populace, which you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
I believe the lack of space, while interesting in its own form, created some of Japan's greatest fortes: efficiency and tranquility.

I hope to be able to visit there again someday, and maybe, if time allows, to live there.

I've been to many idealistic upper-middle-class suburbs in the US. The neatly-kept lawns, gardens, and shrubs along with the wooden backdrop, give off this aura of "traditional" America. Especially in the summer, where the fluffy clouds and the clear blue sky are very beautiful to see.
The real shame is that these types of suburbs probably account for maybe 1/10th or less of the total suburban space, whereas the other 9/10ths is either old-looking or cheap.
And don't get me started on the rich neighborhoods, where you feel more avarice, envy, and total arrogance than warmth. Sure, they look nice, but they're totally pretentious.

But it's very different from what you see here, where almost anywhere in suburban Japan, you can find that same warm feeling of compaction and tranquility.

In my opinion, I prefer Japan's tranquility, only because it's smaller to wander and cleaner to look at, due to its small size.

I really liked it too, I wish there were some around my neighborhood, or even anywhere in the county really.

I've seen some pictures of towns in Austria, Italy, Switerland, and other Euro areas that have really nice wooded hilly areas with rivers and such.

Why can't the US make a conscious effort to keep things beautiful too?

It's time to watch Japanese people live their lives on unsecured security cameras. It is currently 4:30pm in Tokyo, and lolis are squirming with boredom in the cram school.

Sounds tempting. I've been learning Japanese by myself for quite some time and I think it's on a functional level, and while my English isn't perfect I think it's more than functional. After looking at the requirements, the only thing that's stopping me is a Bachelor's degree which I don't have (19 years old). I don't mind working outside of Tokyo but I don't know if I could lie about having a degree. Not a question of honesty, more like not wanting to live in constant fear that someone might discover that and send me back home.

The view from the front door of my apartment.

I've always found narrow streets somewhat claustrophobic.
Strangely I don't feel the same way in small rooms.
Pic related is one of the laneways near here, I don't think narrow Western streets have quite the same feel as [>>9550632] for example, but perhaps that's just weeabooism.

Just my own local ones. The picture >>9553944 is from my own little hiking spot that I found after a while. The view was sobering and I spent many hours just sitting up there.

Back in the USA. Not happy with my current situation, so once I find a legal loop out I'll be back to being a happy hobo again.

Went on a tourists visa, found work on craigslist, then had my boss apply for my workers visa. Not the most likely of circumstances, but I made it work. I will say that living in Tokyo sucked super ass. The amount I paid for a half closet in Tokyo bought me a 2LDK in Yokkaichi including a parking spot.

Well I can't seem to find my other pictures. Seems I moved them to a different hard drive. That's all for now folks.

Do you know anything about how easy or hard it would be for someone to get a job in Japan for 1-2 years working in a lab at Tokyo University? It might be kinda interesting to head over there for a change of scenery once I finish my PhD and do a postdoc somewhere in the USA.

No idea. I do know that universities there don't function like they do in the US. They have no government grants to pay students to do research. This is to my best understanding from a native student, so I could very well be wrong.

I found a picture of the "apartment" that I rented for one month at the rate of $400 in Asakusa, Tokyo. It was literally a closet that I couldn't even stand up in since some French guy lived on top of me. Tokyo is a poo hole unless you're rich, which I most certainly was not.

I always thought it'd be neat to live in either Kyoto (for the history and temples) or Osaka (because fuck yeah port cities). My third choice would be akiba.

I swear to god, if I win the lottery I'm gonna take a bunch of you for 1 year to Japan.

Anyone has been playing lottery?

No, because it's a massive waste of money.
