On windows I have my own soundpack I constructed from my favorite characters voices.

I've tried all of those operating systems. FreeBSD is the one I'm least familiar with and felt like a more hard-core Linux and I'm not sure the advantages, but I do know that openBSD is supposed to be one of the most secure operating systems out of the box ever.

All OS's are good for different things, Windows is a great all-rounder and has access to loads of games, windows is the most commonly used so it pays to be familiar with it.

I've always been impressed by OS X's software and how well it all works together. If you're the type of person who utilizes all of Apple's software then it's a dream to have it all working in harmony. I love Garageband too.

Linux is nice for getting really close to the wire and having something which can be a really specialist techy setup. I love bash too, it can do so much.

I really don't understand why people argue which is best, it's totally down to your needs and what you want from an operating system.

My run with 7 on my laptop has been utterly perfect. No problems at all (T60). However on my self-built computer there was a period of time filled with BSoD's nearly every ~10 days. Quick question while on the topic of OS: I want to get into Linux and all that jazz that goes with it; where would be the best starting point for that? What should I know beforehand? >> No.9543247

>>9543222
I prefer BSD because its TRU UNIX. Well, not really, but the GNU extensions teach you some bad habits. I'm not anal about them like most people (things like pkill and zcat are HELLA TIGHT), but you can tell UNIX was designed a certain way when you use BSD. More "prg foo | out foo | print foo > file" and less "prg --out--print foo file".

>> No.9543267

>>9543226
Ubuntu. It's friendly and pretty out-of-the-box, but it's still Linux under all the shininess. Try the live CD (you boot from the CD into a temporary Ubuntu environment) or the Wubi installer (you install it as though it was any piece of Windows software and it creates a virtual hard drive for itself). If you decide you want to take it further, properly install it. It's pretty easy and foolproof if you use your head: the installer creates a partition on your hard drive and installs a piece of software that gives you a Windows / Mac / Linux / whatever menu on boot-up.

All Linux distributions follow the same basic formula, but Ubuntu is good if you're new to Linux or don't want to spend too much time customizing things. Linux is *very* customizable, so keep in mind that anything on-screen you can change.

Depends what you want to use your system for. If you just want to use it for browsing the net, listening to music and other simple tasks without caring how it works and with minimal fuss, try Mint. Probably the most polished beginner's distro. That's probably enough for you but if you want to get to know how Linux works then that requires an investment of time and the reading of docs/trying things on your own. Yeah, that should be obvious but a lot of computer users (read: windows users) expect it to be just like their other systems when you start getting into it.

>>9543247
I don't think that it matters if something is not pure unix. Linux is ubiquitous compared to all other UNIX descendants so as long as it's internally consistent with itself (and logical) it doesn't really matter. But that's just, like, my own opinion man.

>> No.9543333

>>9543316
Well, I don't really expect it to just work (Linux is the "anti-mac" in that sense, as far as my own use/purposes), but I would like some sort of starting ground like said docs or books. Time is something I have plenty of, it's just a matter of not wasting it looking for the shit I need to begin actually doing stuff. I'll probably go with Ubuntu first just to get comfortable.

>> No.9543391

>>9543333
Well, even with something like Mint or Ubuntu you can still get to the stuff under the hood (even though they've gone out of their way to make it a smooth experience for people who don't care/are completely new). If you want a more interactive experience with setting up your system/customizing it, try Arch. Its wiki is thorough and covers most topics. While you might not learn very much as to *why* things need to be a certain way (the linux from scratch manual probably covers that much better. A lot of it is UNIX legacy) you'll at least appreciate the how. Is that more of what you had in mind?

>> No.9543450

more or less, understanding "why" doesn't really matter to me more-so than being able to use the OS to a competent degree from an IT/Programming standpoint. I read up on the Arch Linux beginner guide and that shit is ridiculous; I knew they said "from scratch", but god-damn is that shit "FROM SCRATCH". Thanks though, I appreciate the help.

Windows would be a hardcore slut everybody uses.

OS X would be a hipster cunt most guys do not want to put up with, but wouldn't mind fucking if she offered.

And FreeBSD would be her Oneechan.

It's just an introduction and some details might not apply to linux (such as linux uses sda1 instead of ad0s1), but it's the concept that's important. Surprisingly I don't see many linux guides include this, or maybe I didn't google enough.

There was an outstanding bug for a while with hard to see/invisible text in the post-MoF games but they fixed it several revisions ago. You don't even need to run them with the lang prefix. When it comes to VNs (and games with intros) I've managed to get everything to work as well by installing the appropriate things with winetricks and onto my base system (like lib32 mpg123 and vorbis). That's really weird, it seems like some external problem, you should check your drivers and the console when you run the game. Do you see any errors? Are you using official (propietary) drivers?

According to WineHQ it should work out of the box (it did for me), can you run native Linux games?

Also, are you running 64bit Linux? Maybe you accidentally installed 64 bit Wine which is experimental at this point and doesn't work very well. You should install 32 bit Wine (i386) with 32bit compatibility libraries (ia32-libs in Ubuntu I think).

Does Wine fuck up with the proprietary drivers?

What you want is timidity++ server running to emulate a MIDI device. Then you can tell wine to use it via alsa/pulse. Google it, there are guides probably.

They're both supposed to work fine without configuration. They do for me and I just confirmed that they do for a friend who uses Ubuntu 12.04. Do native games work for you?

On the contrary, video acceleration probably works better with proprietary drivers. Make sure that you've got things working with a native game/glxgears or something.

I just uninstalled everything wine-related, installed wine-i386 and ia32-libs.

I noticed that I couldn't get sound to work in EoSD or IM until I did the above. Now they both work fine, but I have never been able to get PCB to work at all, though it's doing something different.

This time around, I load PCB with wine, it goes fullscreen, I hear the music, and suddenly begins pressing buttons for me, going deeper into the menu and moving up the menu repeatedly, and it is out of my control. Sometimes, the game crashes here.

Since I installed those libraries and utilities, many of the info messages have went away (the other games work fine with more), however, I still have some output in the terminal:

$ wine th07e.exe

I remember that I had an issue with framerate several revisions ago when in fullscreen (was a conflict with vsync and the AMD drivers - not really wine's fault). At the time I could get around it by running the touhou games in windowed mode (game settings). Try that. Or running PCB in its own wine desktop. wine explorer.exe /desktop=800x600 th07e.exe

still, that's weird.

not surprised at all that a lot of the NEET board runs linux

Hey, running it in windowed mode works. Thanks for the advice.
