Is there any such thing as good fanon?

Apart from obvious fanon that is basically canon but not confirmed, I can't think of any instance where I have liked a touhou more after discovering their fanon personality.

Fanon takes otherwise likeable characters and turns them into generic anime archetypes.
ZUN really needs stop being so accepting of fanon.

But where is Cooking Yuuka 2: Dinner with Enemies?

I really hate the stuffed squid recipe, I always fuck up the skewers.

The stuff that Koakuma and Daiyousei get because fanon is pretty much all they have going for them.

I like Kaguya NEET.
But I hate it when other people discuss it.

I am such a conflicted man.

Byakuren became morally ambiguous thanks to fanon.

That made her much more interesting.

>> No.9456190

All the characters are blank slates, fanon is what makes them good.

I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, but they're basically just anime stereotypes. Which is great, because fanon builds on that.

Maybe if you don't read any side material and play through each game with one shot type only.
Also, you think the canon is anime stereotyped and not fanon?!

>>9456186
Except most of it was silly and unfitting for Touhou's setting and has been ruled out now with SoTP.

>>9455767
>ZUN really needs stop being so accepting of fanon.

I like to think SoTP is the start of this. He ruled out a ton of fanon relating to MoF, TD and UFO characters and confirmed only the sensible stuff like Okuu being baka.

Honestly I think that the books and the manga really developed the characters in overall. It might be just me, though.

Any time ZUN elaborates on anything, ninety percent of fanon surrounding it will collapse just because it's all so different. It's not like he goes out of his way to do it.

The comics hardly show them having any personality to begin with, so it's not like they can have much impact.

Rude sage for stupid discussion, general fanwankery.

Yeah, but he was a lot more careful in PMiSS. Everything was from Akyuu's perspective (which isn't 100% accurate) and was often fairly vague.

In SoTP, there's an unrefutable interview between Marisa, Kanako, Byakuren and Miko which not only gave us a clear view of their personality and motivations but also shed a lot of light on other characters from more informed perspectives than Akyuu. Akyuu's bias against youkai was also a lot clearer.

>> No.9456900

>>9456867
That's just PMiSS being unique in format, though. BAiJR interviews, CiLR, and CoLA were all written from an objective point of view as well.

They all had plenty of personality in SSIB.

ZUN also talks more about the characters in the included text files. The spinoffs also contain a lot more about the characters than the normal games do.

Though according to ZUN, the danmaku is what characterizes the characters the most. If you don't play the games or don't pay attention to the spell cards you will not understand them as well. But then, it is a fairly abstract understanding.
