I always wanted to ask you about your tracing - your method of getting nice smooth finishes is a brush, right? so then how do you vectorize it after?

Also, uh, how do you work with a 400x400 and blow it up so you can work on it at 4000x3000 yet it's still clear enough for you to use?

I've only really done one real vector, all the rest are just traces. I just resize whatever image I want to trace to (in this case) 4000x3000 and make it 2 layers (one with 50% opacity, one with 100%). I trace the lines on new layers using the pen->stroke (adjusting minimum brush stroke in the F5 menu with the brush selected) with the 50% opacity original visible (toggling the 100% on when something isn't clear).

So I'm not really vectoring, just tracing.

How do you do the gradients? I already know how to do the strokes and fills, it's just the gradients that I can't trace.

just trace whatever you want to fill as usual, then select (right click -> make selection) the area. Pick an empty layer and add a layer mask. The only visible part of the layer right now will be the area you selected. Go nuts with gradients and huge brushes.
