MOST of the girls in H!P are pretty. I can understand choosing Riho, with the whole ace thing, but why not pair her with someone like Ishida, who would compliment her better? Why Wada? She hasn't been too popular for quite a while... the only reason why people still pay attention to her is because she's one of the only 1st gen members left.

I know her sales have been declining since she's debuted, but she always seemed to do rather well with merchandise and overall popularity.
And out of current H!P, I don't see many who might be able to get better sales as a soloist.

Airi, ok, she's currently the queen of H!P when it comes to sheer popularity. Momochi, because kids buy her stuff, sure. Reina, definitely, but she's having her own band already. Sayumi, still can't sing that well. Miyabi or Maimi, maybe. Aika, nope. Everyone else, doubtful.

Honestly, I believe they might be getting rid of solo acts altogether, but we'll see.

You obviously have no idea how becoming a popular idol works. Remember that H!P is basically dead in popularity and awareness right now. The girls can't do much because they don't have a proper presence like AKB. Only a girl like Momoko has managed to shine, which is amazing in my opinion. It would be a miracle if any of the current new gens (11th too) does anything worth noticing.

And MM's biggest ace ever was Natsumi Abe, but they also had Fujimoto and Takahashi. The entire 4th generation was also ridiculously popular. They had something else. Riho has it. The other girls don't.

My recent feelings on 9-10ki's potential as idols:
Riho > Ayumi = Masaki > Erina > Haruka = Haruna > Fuku > Zukki

Riho is well, Riho. Many complain about her personality in the west, but I think Riho is just an introvert and the group needs an introvert or two, because a lot of people like them or identify with them. Besides that, she just needs to learn to control her voice a bit which I expect her to learn with time.

Ayumi's singing has improved a lot. If she opens up in variety shows (she seems to be tense and without her usual smile in the recent kurobara) and learns to project feelings in her voice, she'll be top tier. She rocks her performances and is a cute, though still way too tense, midget overall.

Masaki was the super-improver girl in the auditions, and I'm happy to see this attitude & effort didn't end at her getting in. She already dances quite sharp, her singing is constantly improving and her voice seems versatile since she can pull off both cutesy and deeper voices. Besides that her character makes her interesting to watch & listen to. Let's just hope she grows up well.

Erina's singing is still bad, but she's come out of her shell and her dancing is getting fierce. She doesn't deserve lines, but she does deserve screen time, preferably lots of it. Besides that she's turning into a real beauty, I'd love a PB. Let's just hope she doesn't develop into an obnoxious, Momochi-style character.

Haruka is someone who I expected to go straight to the front line, but who apparently can't handle it (yet). Her singing is great, but despite her egg time she's been showing obvious stamina problems and her live dance often looks tired and loose. Maybe being an idol is just too exhausting for someone her age/physical maturity? She's still a growing, prepubescent child. I hope she'll manage.

Haruna's the most fun out of 10ki on variety so far, too bad she can't really dance and sing. Hoping she'll improve in that department, and that she gets more chances to show her personality. She'll never be great with performances, but she could capture the hearts of people with MC and variety. She's also important for the balance of the group with her age and maturity, though she might feel like a bit of an outsider all things considered.

Fukumura was probably chosen to fulfil 2 roles: being a pretty/sexy member, and having a supportive singer role. So far she hasn't really come close to either. Body-wise Erina and even Masaki are showing more promise, while Mizuki looking somewhat swollen and having slightly Rinapuu eyes don't exactly make her top candidate for the pretty member role. Her performances have become more expressive, but you have to look for the improvement to notice it, and her singing is still mostly emotionless. I also don't think her wota character is working that well, sometimes she seems like a fangirl among idols rather than an idol herself...

Suzuki has been praised for supposedly singing well, but I haven't heard any examples of this (I'd love links if you have any). Her dancing is what it is and her figure has been getting worse, on top of this she's been losing her genki compared to the time she entered. She doesn't seem very happy and it's worrying, some people are even afraid of her graduating though I wouldn't go that far.

Most of what people call "shy types" are introverts. Introverts come in many different kinds, and Reina isn't really the prime example of the trait since she's someone who is lacking social skills. I think Riho is a quite obvious introvert.

The sad thing is that the western world, and America in particular, glorifies extroversion and thinks of introversion as a fault to be fixed. I think this is the reason so many western fans think Riho is boring, soulless or arrogant. They think someone who isn't super-social has yet to come out of her shell, or is ignoring the environment out of spite. Introverts are just people who have a rich inner world and don't need stimulation from the environment as much as some other people (an example of the opposite, high extroversion, would be S/mileage's Meimi). Eastern Asian countries are known for appreciating introversion in a way the west doesn't and this is also seen in Riho's popularity.
