How much do you actually know about welfare? Probably not very much, because you're the type who would allow themselves to die before ever resorting to it. You can lose your right to it if you can't provide sufficient evidence that you've been looking for work.

Once you're out on the street with no money, no friends, and nobody to help you, you're pretty much fucked. Getting money requires a job, and you need money to make yourself presentable for a job. Many places will turn you down if they find out you're homeless, so even if you save up money for a P.O. box, that won't do. Some people need welfare so they can actually successfully acquire work.
