In a time long before any of our known history there lived an ancient species that has been lost to time. In those years Antarctica was a lush continent and its people constructed cities and has technology that is thousands of years more advanced than our own.

Sand comes from larger rocks. Water gets in the cracks between rocks, and freezes. This causes the water to expand, and breaks off part of the rock.

If you only look at the Sahara desert or one of our rain forests then you would never suspect that there are massive cities on earth.

Why bother colonizing a wasteland when you can just travel to a new planet with far better resources?

Population issues were not a problem for ancient civilizations. Look at our civilizations as an example. The most intelligent cultures have the least amount of children and are even in risk of being outbred by more primitive cultures. The ancient ones were extremely intelligent and so overpopulation was never a problem for them and they had no need to force colonization of desolate wastelands when they could just travel the stars.

This story does have a happy ending though. Ironically it was the barbarism of the westerners that ultimately saved Japan.

The Japanese people had been infected with the bloodlust and they began to commit many atrocities. Eventually the barbarians bombed them into submission during World War 2 and it would seem like this would be the end of the story for Japan, but the Japanese people rose out of the flames of Hiroshima and Nagasaki like a phoenix in its rebirth.
