I've recently finished learning all the basic kanji through the Kanjidamage method and am also almost done with going through the general grammar. The main thing keeping me from actually reading Japanese text now is of course sufficient vocabulary knowledge. So my question is, how did /jp/sies who learned Japanese get past this step?

Play VNs with jparser and pick up vocab that way.

Just picking up vocab as I went along

It's extremely slow and tedious at first but at least it's more interesting than just trying to drill vocab lists

Translate stuff, write down words that you deem "common", then do your reps.
