I was watching NHK a couple days ago and they had a piece about the anniversary of the Okinawa attacks, and about how one of the ships was hit and the crew landed on a different island and survived 40 days on only leaves. The survivors/families don't visit the island though because China claims it's theres despite being under Japanese rule.
It lead me to conclude that Japan is a bunch of pussies.

The reason why Okinawa seems more culturally similar to China is because Japan forced it to. They used Okinawa as a middleman between China and Japan, and Japan has stopped being a tributary of China. Although Okinawa was under the control of Japan by means of military might, Japan encouraged Okinawa to keep the appearance of an independent and Chinese cultured country to maintain trade with China.
