Moot's update made me wonder.

What's an approximate of the people that post in /jp/?
I previously thought it was about 600 lurkers and 250 posters maximum.

Don't the various archives make estimates? Obviously getting a good number of lurkers would be difficult without nginx logs or something, but we could make a reasonable guess.

Does anyone else take occasional breaks from posting (but not from viewing)? Every few months, I decide I won't post for a couple of weeks. No matter how much I want to argue or blog or even add something worthwhile, I simply sit there, lurking and reading.

After a while, I realize how much time I've spent posting inane bullshit, and I start to see my own posts as more valuable, so I put more effort into them as a result. It also opens my mind as to how good /jp/ is. When you sit there constantly refreshing and posting in the same threads, you get into the "/jp/ is shit now it's all trolling and shitposting!" mindset. But when you just lurk, you explore all the threads and read the ones you care about; I care about VNs, so I read the threads. I don't care about metashit unless I'm actually involved in the bitching.

This is something I think everyone should do, it's an interesting experience. But you have to not post for the entire duration, not even once.

Actually /a/ hates most of these people. Sometimes they are more elitist than us. Imagine people that use sage just for the sake of "insulting" telling people to go away from their boards. That's how /a/ is when it comes to elitism. In overall you can find good threads to talk about anime, but in the end of the day you'll encounter many people that go like "lol ur anime is shit". /v/ in a sense is much worse than /a/. And /b/. I'd estimate the number is in the mid-thousands ~6000-ish people per day.

However, about half of those people are just going to /jp/ to find links to something or another, and then they don't come back.

This. I watched a few episodes of the show and it's pretty cute, it's just a shame about the fanbase. Homestuck, most anime, and even Touhou suffer from the same problem, it's just that the MLP fanbase is still young and very loud.

One thing I'm grateful for is that it's given Western society someone else to judge, for better or for worse. Worst case scenario, bronies get laughed at and made fun of. Good, maybe they'll learn to shut up and tone it down. Best case scenario, normalfags accept that adult males can like cute things, which may ultimately benefit people like us.

I don't like normalfags. I'll be honest, I think normal people are the cancer killing 4chan. Look at /b/'s front page, it's all 'my girlfriend' this and 'my girlfriend' that, it's nothing but posturing bravado in my eyes and it doesn't contribute to the overrall quality of a board. Want to know why night time /a/ and previously night time /v/ were remembered so fondly? Because most of the people on 4chan at 2:00am PST are not 'normal' considering societal definition, often abnormal people are the most creative though, they take out their abnormality in artistic ways. That's why so many of them are good at creative writing (look at how many famous authors have been abnormalfags). And I'm not talking serial killer abnormal or, or anyone who feels the need to identify with pathetic subcultures like emo or scene, I'm talking about people who are just quite cynical and have an understanding of the term 'dry wit'.

In short, normal people are boring - they talk about normal things, their normal life with their normal girlfriend at their normal school/college/workplace with their normal friends eating their normal food and retiring to their normal apartment/house. They aren't interesting. Take that horse head dude on Nico Nico, he's clearly as abnormal as they come, yet he's absolutely hilarious as a result. The world would be fucking BORING without people like that. Basically, /b/'s content these days is normal people dealing with normal things in a normal way ('hey /b/, i fucked such and such a girl, but X problem happened, what do I do?') Tell me honestly, is that as hilarious as hearing anons give serious advice on how to jerk off over sleeping girls? Or hearing someone recount an genuine incest story? Fuck no.

The only reason we (Touhou fans) aren't completely lumped together with MLP and Homestuck is because Touhou isn't as popular (or accessible) as those two in the West.

And lets face it: the West, as a whole, shits up any fanbase.

This state of affairs would continue until the aliens came.

Whoa, hang on dude. Many Touhou fans do the same thing: write and draw crossovers with other material just because. Right now, for instance, typing ´´touhou crossover" on danbooru brings up about 123 pages of results.
Ponies and Touhou are the same thing with different content, apparently. It seems to me that people that claim otherwise are in plain denial.

Yes, but that is because of what this guy >>9317828 said; it has to do with the respective fanbases' popularity on the boards and across the globe. It's a strange conection and interaction of these factors that I'm not sure how it works entirely.
The point is: maybe the whole memespouting touhou shit doesn't happen here, but it does somewhere else, and will keep going on as long as touhou keeps being remotely popular. Maybe there is another board for ´´superior" MLP fans that are ´´above" the rest of the community, but I wouldn't know about them.

You are using these terms incorrectly, I believe. "Scum" is usually meant to describe worthless people. The first image that comes to mind at this is the trash that grew up on the street, can only speak barely coherent, and will anyway sooner resort to violence than to words.
"Too har[d]core" would only fit on people who are too soft to endure.
Try to fit these two things together into a single image.
Too tough for the uncivilized barbarian?

Either we are the educated elite (as evidenced by correct use of little girls and sage) and /a/ is scum that does not belong here - OR - we are the hardest gangsters in da hood, and /a/ better not mess with us, those pussies.
Choose.

Ever wondered why some drug users get all bitchy when you tell them their shit is bad? Ever wondered why some weaboos get all bitchy when you tell them their shit is autistic? That not socializing doesn't get you anywhere?
For this I blame the gay people, that actually managed to imposed their bitchiness on society.

>Maybe there is another board for ´´superior" MLP fans that are ´´above" the rest of the community, but I wouldn't know about them.
ponychan was ok the last time i checked.
i think the main problem with /mlp/ that most non-obnoxious bronies left 4chan (at least with the pony shit) for other places before it was created, so the only people left to fill it up were the ones responsible for spreading the whole pony cancer. and then they atracted a bunch of trolls and even more 'cancer'. the 'normal' fans won't go back here because they don't want to associate with this kind of people, so the board just continues getting shittier. it was doomed from the start.
