Touhou Hisoutensoku is the third fighting game in the Touhou Project and like its predecessors, Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Touhou Hisoutensoku is a collaboration between ZUN and Twilight Frontier. Due to that collaboration, its art was drawn by Alphes and the music was composed by U2 Akiyama, both from Twilight Frontier.

The dpad is terrible anything that makes extensive use of it, let alone fighting games.

It's certainly possible to be competent with it, hell, I play Marvel with it, but you'll have to spend a ton of time learning how to get around its awfulness with shit like TK motions and anything charge related.

If you want to play on a pad basically anything else is a better option. Or you can always use the analog, it's a viable option.

Otaku culture sucks pretty bad. It will be very rare for you to find /jp/ers amidst the guys that label themselves as otaku and only know about a few anime. Here, the shonen anime are a fucking huge success, like Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, etc. There are very good cosplays once in a while on cons, but most of them suck. One of the major differences between Brazil and USA on the otaku culture topic though, is that the fujoshi subgroup is relatively small, and most of them are not landwhales. You may be able to find a few diamonds amidst the mud, though. Also, almost no one knows about VNs these days. And pretty much no one will hate you for being a weeabo, only if you dress like one.

Pretty much this. All of the "otaku" people I used to know didn't had any idea of what a VN was, or Touhou even. They were mostly wired on shonen anime and manga. I've been a /jp/er for quite a while and lost contact with all of them, today I rarely spend any time outside of my room, am on several antidepressants and avoid all Brazilian anime communities.

Makes me think that all /jp/ers in our country are actually doing their best to get away or hide their cultural traces, instead of showing them off like said otaku. Those must be truly the cream of the crop.

It's difficult since you're at a stage where there are plenty of basics you still need to go over. First, you need to learn to recognize when you're at a disadvantage. Yes, pressing buttons will work against bad players and may surprise a good player, but anyone half decent will just punish you for it. This also includes using spell cards randomly. Either use them defensively (cancelling unsafe moves, reversals if you're good at mind reading) or combo into them. There are a handful of specific situations where you could also use them, but for now, stick with that until you know what you're doing. Block on wakeup. Block in the corner. Escaping is almost always more successful than mashing or countering when you're under pressure.

Play more. Bonus points if it's with people that play the same character as you, so you can see what they do. Unfortunately, we only had one character in common.

Play lunatic story mode and you'll know what grazing is all about. As someone who is quite proficient as Patchy I can tell you that her shining finger is pretty much the only real threatening melee attack, which is largely avoidable. You're really not going to beat her in firefights most of the time, so you should try to take the fight to her. Just gotta be good at grazing and attacking, since she's going to zone with a lot of spirit attacks.

If you're in a firefight, use lasers or bullets that are really dense. Her 6C and 236B/C are really fast and dense so you need something to bust through that.

Bah, that's easy. She's one of the best-characterized characters in Touhou - which isn't saying much, true, but still. On the surface she's a cold ice-bitch, but the way she minds her loli vampires - even going out of her way to surprise them with puppet shows and shit - shows that she's got a 3D personality.

She's human, but with great power - a rare minority in Gensokyo - and on top of that, she's competent, level-headed and dutiful, which few Touhous can lay claim to And she's cute.

Play someone who's good, and they'll show you how your movement can REALLY be used to go around bullets and do gimmicks (ie: triangle grazing). GGs. Was going to chase you a bit with Cirno's freezey thing til you started teching a bit, looks like you're improving with that. As a general rule if the other guy is *right* next to you on wake up, you want to be teching out of there (even though the highjump works against freezing technique as well)

Also some basic Reisen combos:
66A -> 236B will net you a ton of damage, there are finishers for it too once you get more comfortable
5AAAA 236B in corner will work better than the 5AAAA. But check the wiki, there are much better ones, these are just basic stuff.

Hell wave cannon will never give you damage increase over any half decent combo. Damage/limit rate of this skill is awful. Screen clearing thing is also overrated: HWC throws 4xB1 bullets when 5C is B6 and 2C is B10. Add big and obvious startup to everything i mentioned before and you have one of the worst skills in the game. The only good thing about this skill is that it is good if blocked, so you can incorporate it in stagger blockstrings.

I am tired from hearing anything about Control Rods. Let me do some math and convert each rod into percentile health advantage just to compare them with another buff type system card.

Each Rod increases damage done by 10% and damage taken by 7.5%. So, without further ado
Life advantage with CR = (1 + 0.1 * k) / (1 + 0.075 * k) , where k is the amount of CRs used
~2.3% HP advantage at level 1
~4.3% HP advantage at level 2
~6.1% HP advantage at level 3
~7.6% HP advantage at level 4
Dolls give you 3%; 7%; 12% and 20% on levels 1-4.
That means only one thing: SDs are ALWAYS better than rods.

Conclusion:
Simple math proves that Control Rods are suboptimal and should be replaced by Sacrificial Dolls in any deck. There is absolutely no point in adding rods to the deck unless you already have 4 dolls.

If anyone wants to argue with math then you should add something to back your opinion (statistic, math, etc).

Okuu's Dial A gives 2539 damage, while Aya's Dial A gives 1277 damage.
Of course we are not going to combo into Dial A, but it's only an example.
The calcs should have been done considering the actual damage of the BnB that you use and the one that your opponent uses, not in HP Adv. in my opinion. Doesn't matter that you have 2.5k more HP than me if you lose more than 1.5k of HP in a combo while I only lose 1k.

Thought I'd chime in with my opinion on rods, I do agree that when you just look at regular combos, rods are not all that great.

But, what rods excel in is making high damage spellcards more potent. It's not just an increase in damage, but it makes the game unforgiving for the opponent, they know that if they get hit they die. They can't as readily take risks anymore. Characters with easy confirms to high damage cards can rake in good profit from rods.

Why do you think so? Basicly yes, you won't hit competent player with dialA out of nowhere. But punishing unsafe moves, confirming guard breaks, combo followups, hj9 D2 crossups and staggering dial in pressure tends to work on any level of playing. Anti-air 5AAA/5AA(depending on character) are happening even on the relatively high level of play.

And, returning on topic of leveling 8 cards. It's quite possible, i myself run 20 skills+buff systems decks a lot. Sure, that tactic is probably suboptimal (mainly because sometimes you really don't have time to level everything up), but it's fun to play this game that way. You can use your big 4+-card and still lose the round, but persisting bonuses will never betray you.

On the "losing okizeme in order to level up card" topic - it's just wrong. Most combos that provide at least decent okizeme opportunity give you time to level up card and still react to the groundtech direction of the opponent. Let's take Okuu for example - any limiting combo(except for RD ones) allows her to level up card and still recover faster then opponent. Yes, you won't have much time to rethink spacing and probably you won't be able to force groundteched enemy into the same corner he just escaped. But you will get oki on him.

For example, that JP Aya i was talking about earlier (the one with both SDs and CRs) also used Tengu Fans. Ofc he couldn't level everything up, but it didn't hinder him. When there was no time he just used some of his systems to fuel spellcards.

But running both dolls and rods, you're risking too much okizeme for your system cards and it's just not worth it, since getting the offensive against a good player isn't very easy.

The oki in this game is actually not that important, sure it's good to do but in most cases being able to chase with melee will still keep you at advantage. Due to wrongblocking there are very little oki mixups that would lead to quaranteed damage (spellcard oki doesn't count). You do lose some setup potential on oki when levelling cards but you don't get automatic disadvantage for it.

And what annoys me the most here is the assumption that you always have to max them, this is not true, with buff systems, each of them helps,. you don't have to level them to max in all games. Even if you have 4 of them in a deck the rest can be used for spellcard fodder depending on situations.

Oki helps you win the current round, leveling dolls and Rods help you win the current and upcoming rounds. It's not rare to be far enough ahead to stall for cards, levels etc, and sometimes I find myself in situations where I'm so far behind that I just give up on the round and prepare my hand for the next one.
That's another interesting aspect of the game, because levels and cards carry over within a match you can plan ahead to get the most out of you recourses. It would be boring if everyone had the same strategy.

Then maybe you should learn how to manipulate the weather and use it to your advantage. Manipulating the weather is a HUGE part in this game and can make or break some KOs, ie: force phoon at the last second. Sometimes it really comes in handy.

For example, when i play wako, i love to force Snow, Mt Vapor, River Mist, and Scorching Sun.
Snow because people like to run 9001 reversals 4~5 card reversals, and snow usually forces them to drop a few of those. Same with Mt vapor.
River Mist because of the strong bait potential
Scorching sun because her 4card frog split does like.. 1~2k more damage in it.
etc etc etc. If you don't like phoon, just wait for the Mt Vapor to pass by, or if the counter is on phoon, force a knockdown whether its you or your opponent. Use a card, force the weather counter to change. That's how you should deal with it.

I don't have much to say, since you adapted pretty well over the matches (mostly DP baits and better ground tech). Still, I'd recommend you try to use j.6A and 2C/j.2C more during neutral. Tenshi's j.5A is kinda poor, and you're not going to win the Youmu match-up if we trade j.5A all day long. It's still fun to play against some aggressive j.5A rush-in play!

Adapting is being able to find patterns in what initially seems random. It also means being able to see when your opponent has adapted to you. If they counter your patterns, you have to either change them (negate their advantage), or counter their counter (take the advantage).
Obviously, that's only against decent players.

Pretty much what he said. It's yomi in a nutshell. You read the opponent and look for habits/openings.. some more obvious than the other; it tends to be less obvious the higher the level of the opponent and thats usually when the tactic of 'forcing damage' is crucial.

Most people in /jp/ (sadly) will constantly fall for the same bait or be stuck in the same string because won't ever wait patiently to look for openings. They always try to mash or hj out of the first loop without ever considering what comes next, and thus you're able to read the opponent a LOT less, if you can read them at all, that is.

There's only so many drops I can handle. Feels bad when i eat 2k BnB because a cross up forced me to hop forward due to delay block on the crossup. GG nevertheless.

Also, just wondering, do you ever respect the opponent's strings? I noticed that i'd always get some sort of CH or just plain out punish you after 1 loop, and you never blocked enough to go even past one loop. All i'd do is stagger and you'd try to autopilot dash out + get hit easily.

You should maybe try to block a bit and analyze the strings first rather than trying to hope every dash out would work.

You're right about the dashouts being autopilot, like 90% of my play is. It gets better the longer I unrust, but oh well. And no, I don't usually block a whole Suwako string because there's so many variations after the flutterkick. When I took one in the face that was usually a misinput/lagdrop 623, haha.

Counterhits: doesn't Suwako have one flutterkick followup that can be mashed out? I could've sworn it was the dive but apparently not. I used to play imluc a ton and he'd use it constantly and now I have no idea what it was.

imluc usually doesn't have much of a strong pressure. He was more tree-neutral based and you really couldn't get much out of it. Her j.A is one of the WORST places to try and even mash because of how many options she has after it. In fact, suwako is just hard to mash out from in general. You should be trying to look for BE points or hj points instead of trying to mash/dash+dialA out. The only spot where i can see a LONG ranged melee (Not like udonge's melees, but stuff like yuyuko 2A/3A) is after a mistimed TK'd j.8A land.

idk about imluc, but my pressure is much more of the style that punishes carelessness than going for the guardcrush. Moreover, i make sure you can't mash out of it, because i've had enough people do that to me. If anything, i always force you to resort to neutral and if you try to go into the offensive, i just set up to punish it.

But yeah, vs suwako, you shouldn't have the mindset of "when can i mash out?" but the mindset of "Wheres the opening so i can force the neutral again."

Like several times, as you tried to go back into the offensive, all i needed to do was catch it, and in certain cases, guard crush you via aerial strings. I don't allow easy escapes, but at the same time, suwako can't really crush either. You gotta be a LOT more patient vs suwako, because she really punishes careless movement due to her zone.
