that's because self-harm itself doesn't have anything to do with suicide. the very meaning of self-harm is damage done to the body without the desire to die. it's a coping mechanism, it provides relief for people who do so. and believe it or not but most people who self harm are pretty ashamed of it and hide it. self-harming attention whores are pretty rare, you just see them more, for obvious reasons.
