There were just as many fail and forced memes back then as there is now.

The difference lies in that there were less people around to post bullshit thus leading to slow moving boards, and consequently more people cared about creating original content (even if those were just bad shops).

Original content these days are usually just MSPaint threads (GodHand, Card Crusher, etc). No one knows what effort means anymore.

Epic threads like "I want to be a girl like Sakura-tan", "Yoshinoya", and the Great Golgolmois thread was birthed. Shitty gimmicks like Caveman came about (and gave birth to the proto-/b/tard).

Unfortunately, 4chan came about and sucked all the Western posters away. RIR6 (world2ch's moot) did a shitty job upkeeping the server. And without Westerners to flame and antagonize, world2ch's Japanese population went back to 2ch.

Lots of goons show up at events like DragonCon, Fanime, WisCon, "ironically" of course, to stalk other posters and try to match a face to an SA account.
One time I caught a goon following me around trying to take pictures of me at an anime con. I'm not a cosplayer, I just posted about AX a few times. I'm probably in some SA spin-off community's database and so are a good percentage of the people that attended the 4chan panels.
I confronted one goon I caught red-handed trespassing at my school (he's not, and never was a student here) and of course he didn't post a thread about his failure.
