As mostly described, it's generally elitest shit-flinging. Mostly used to determine how you got involved with Touhou, but it only really matters whether you're a fan of the series or not. As long as you can tell the difference between canon and fanon, which the Touhou Wiki is good for, then everything's groovy.

Also, /jp/ elitests will report you for RPing. That shouldn't stop you from claiming a waifu and pretending you live with them though. In fact, it's sometimes fun. And technically it's not against the rules, but the janitors/mods seem to overlook that fact sometimes.
