Touhou distinguishes itself from other shmups by playing quite a bit more like a puzzle game than a raw dodging game.

You'll find that Touhou's difficulty is actually much lower than other recognized shmups, but the bullet patterns and designs are both very mesmerizing and often times offer a very specific method of clearing, something missing from many other games.

Zun himself had admitted that his Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler games were practically puzzle games, and the genre almost matches as a mix of the two shmup and puzzle. I'm inclined to say many spellcards and almost every extra stage plays very much like one as well.

Even unskilled players could get through most of the game by looking up a youtube video guide, though that somewhat ruins the fun of figuring out the cards... But you definitely can't watch someone else play to learn how to clear other shmup games.

I get so frustrated sometimes by just making "careless mistakes" but tbh I haven't noticed the pattern in some of the spellcards yet (not the dodge pattern anyway). I never even realized until playing a few days ago that it's more like a puzzle shmup.
