I play both actually, Riichi is the more complex of the two but I wouldn't necessarily say it's "harder".

The variant of Chinese mahjong I play is Sichuan, which is possibly the simplest form of mahjong there is. It kind of makes sense because the game is optimized for very fast play (to facilitate gambling). Thus it can be played in about a third of the time of a standard riichi hand.

As far as buzzwords go I'd say Riichi is more fun given the higher incentive for bigger hands. However, given the complexity of the game I have a hard time finding people who know how to play it and thus my experience playing Riichi is limited solely to Janryumon/Tenhou.

Chinese mahjong on the other hand is simple enough to teach someone within half an hour and thus I have no shortage of friends to meet up with for mahjong nights, sometimes with gambling involved. Also, actually playing with a real full-sized set beats a computer game by a long shot.
