How do popular British shows like Doctor Who go down in Japan?

>> No.918890

British shows like Doctor Who are very popular in Japan. Some of the best Doctor Who shows only air there.

Because there are superior episodes to show from that series. Namely involving a certain Master.

>> No.918993

Do I need to watch the entire series to start watching this show? I've always wanted to watch it, to see what all the fuss is about, but there's like a million episodes.

Just watch from whenever a new actor takes over, there is continuity but its only very subtle.

So would watching the 2005- seasons and skipping the 1960s- ones be a good idea?

>> No.919025

>>919016
To be honest they're all a bit shit, but old or new it doesn't really matter just begin at the start of a particular actor's stint as the doctor.

discussions over who is the best doctor always boil down to whoever was playing the doctor when you were a kid

Tom Baker the batshit crasy doctor.
Frist ep "The Robot".

>> No.919035

>>919016
Yeah, you wont get any tenuous links from the earlier episodes though. Not that he doesnt re-explain them anyway.
Just watch from when David Tenant took over and youll get a good gist of it.

that'd be fine.

Besides, a few of the episodes were lost in a fire. and if you have any of them the BBC will GIVE you a Dalek.

>discussions over who is the best doctor always boil down to whoever was playing the doctor when you were a kid

Haha it does. I used to watch Doctor Who all the time when it was on PBS in the states and I remember it as some awesome shit. I recently watched an old random episode and it was some of the most boring godawful shit I ever watched. I guess it was a bad episode.

>> No.919064

not to mention the large amount of episodes the BBC taped over due to their old policy of taping over things in the archive.

>> No.919077

there are about 750 episodes (200 or so stories) of which about 130 or so are missing and likely lost forever.

>> No.919090

>>919077
That many are lost? Are they whole seasons that are missing or just random episodes while other episodes in that season are fine?

>> No.919101

>>919090
I don't think there is a whole season that is lost, but there are whole story arcs that are. Most of the missing episodes are random bits from arcs (such that a 6 episode arc might only have 2 and 4 left now).

>> No.919111

>>919101
Yeah, that's what I was worried about. I'd rather have whole arcs lost than just have bits and pieces of them.

>> No.919138

>>919111
I think all the missing episodes are concentrated in the first two doctors, but I could be wrong

>> No.919155

>>919138
the third doctor has a few missing or only in black and white but they are mostly the first two.
