What are the most obnoxious Japanese words and phrases used by English-speaking Japanophiles?

"Sugoi" because people think it means "cool".

During the time when I was still in the university my classmates were overusing "kawaii" and "sugoi". But it was always done ironically. Felt pretty good.

As japanimation became more popular, it was kind of inevitable. I'm guessing "anime" and "manga" are in the regular dictionaries now, and "otaku" is probably in those "modern words" dictionaries they release far too often.

I really fucking hate the word "kawaii".

I mean, it's OK if it's coming from a Japanese person, but I've literally never heard it not sound ridiculous coming from a foreigner.

It's, like, just say "cute", you fucking faggot.

>> No.9185692

Hentai and otaku. They're being misapplied every time they're used and it makes me cringe.

However, we don't really have an English equivalent, so I suppose they're just filling lexical gaps.

>> No.9185739

>>9185692
I actually typed "hentai" then realized I couldn't really explain why. Glad I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Obviously it's a word, but it's always used too narrowly or too broadly.

>> No.9185759

>>9185692
I'm not getting the otaku part, but I'll definitely give you hentai. I would like an explanation of otaku's misuse. Are you referencing how in the west it's generally only applied to anime nerds?

>> No.9185807

>>9185759
There is the fact that it only tends to apply to anime in the west, whereas in Japan it means one with obsessive interests about any subject. However, I mean the pride at which people will apply the term to themselves.

In Japan, being 'Otaku' is not some 1337 code word for 'cool' or 'knowledgeable'. 'Otaku' is quite strongly pejorative, meaning that someone pursues their interests at the expense of other commitments. It's not at all a selling point, and furthermore, you cannot use it to refer to yourself. The 'o' is a prefix, and you may never use prefixed for yourself or your own things. It's like 'applying san to your own name' stupid in Japan.

>> No.9185842

>>9185807
I should clarify that the bit about prefixing refers to the original etymology of the word, お宅, and while オタク is likely to be in katakana these days, it still sounds odd to apply to yourself because of the word association.

I think this is a moot point though. To you and me, anime means Japanese cartoons. Otaku largely means anime/manga (or related media) geek.

I'll give you people misusing it, though. I suppose it's followed the same pattern "nerd" has in English.

I cannot narrow down the list to one word, I'll gonna just tack off words.
>Kawaii
>Desu
>Hai
>Sugoi
>Konnichiwa
>Kanji
>Anime
>Manga

There. Now I know some of you are gonna explode in my face about the last two, let me explain.
In actual Japanese usage, anime refers to ALL cartoons, and all manga refers to ALL comics; regardless of nationality and style.

The rest I hate because either they are poorly used, abused, or pronounced so horribly it hurts my ears. It's okay to use them when actually speaking Japanese, but don't just drop 'em into your daily ramblings when speaking English or whatever language you speak.

>> No.9186319

>>9186302
No. Because I understand that the Japanese language isn't built at all like English. Pronunciation isn't nearly as flexible and so they have to manage with approximations.

English on the other hand, is very flexible and you can pronounce the same word in multiple ways (e.g. coupon).
Also, the Japanese 'r' isn't really an 'r', but a mix between 'l' and 'r' which somehow incorporates the 'd' sound. From what I know, plenty of Asian languages are like this.
