4. Honestly? Good writing. That means many things, but it also, in my view, means the following:
- Tropes are cool so long as the character is descriptive of the tropes, rather than the tropes descriptive of the character. Want to have another goddam moe chick? Make her an interesting goddam moe chick.
- Manipulative tragedy is stupid. Don't go the Key route. Even KS was pushing it at times. Or rather, if you really want to write a melodrama soap opera, then make it as hilariously over-the-top as possible. None of this half-assed half-parody half-serious stuff that fails at both.
- Have fun, and write the stories and characters you want to write. Having some real world experiences never hurt either.
Also, I'd like to see:
- Robots
- Different art style.
- Takes place during a war.
- Does not take place at a school, nor does it star some milquetoast of a male lead. Make the main character a strong personality. Maybe even a chick?

Avant-garde composure, do more than just the normal (picture)(text)(options) we're used to seeing.

Drug use. Just because it's always fun to throw stuff like that into the story line, and I'm getting tired of all media involving drugs featuring either scumbags or lazy fucks.

3. MC is a student that doesn't fit in the usual cliché, except for the fact that he sits in THE SEAT. One day a girl enrolls in his class, who is obsessed with anime and assigns her new classmates rolls based on usual clichés. For example, MC's best friend should be the comedic relief character in her opinion, but in reality that doesn't suit his personality at all.
For a few weeks she continuously causes chaos in school, like knocking over a girl ("You have glasses and big breasts, hence you must be the clumsy character and trip a lot!") and trying to force MC on top of her to reenact a "trip and touch" scene, after which she gets in serious trouble for sexual harassment.
Finally, when she kicks MC's friend down the stairs (because she thinks that's how the female lead is supposed to act towards the comedic relief) he is hospitalized and MC loses it, slaps her in the face and yells at her until she drops the act.
The conclusion is that everything she did was because she wanted to live out her fictional world in real life, except for the fact that she really did fall in love with MC. Then consensual intercourse in missionary position is implied.

Not him, but my own idea of manipulative tragedy is something like the protagonist's dog getting run over in the middle of the story: a sad scene that doesn't proceed naturally from the character's faults as in an actual tragedy. Doing something like that is just a way of trying to elicit emotions from the audience without any precedent in the story.

To me, manipulative tragedy is the creation of the tragic by analogy with what we might consider tragic in our own lives; true tragedy is the creation of the tragic by way of the narrative and thematic structure (e.g. the character's dramatic flaw). The first type juts out of the narrative while the second type flows from the premise and characters. It's not always easy to determine which is which.

It would be different if the protagonist was characterized as careless for the whole story and the death of his dog followed from his carelessness, but many writers create stuff like that so readers feel more attached to the characters/story. Many readers would still hold a grudge against you, though, since dead dog stories have become as dead emotionally as the animals that populate them are dead physically.
