Chinese style? Shit, I honestly don't know. Most video games come from Japan, so naturally, there are very VERY few of them out there that actually play the ruleset. You would genuinely have better and faster luck looking for real chinese people to play with.

No idea why anyone want to play chinese mahjong.

Both chinese and riichii mahjong has basically the same yakuman. The difference lies in shit like doras and certain stuff like iipeikou/kan.
Chinese mahjong has no dora. Instead you get flowers and animals. These are your dora.
When you kan, you get paid straight away. When you play, you set the house rules for payment.
As an example maybe 1han = 50cent, each kan = 50cent.

No yaku in chinese mahjong, people usually set the han limit. So you can win with anything as long as you have enough flowers and animals in your hand.

why is american mahjong so weird? I told my mother I play this online and she said I could play with the old jew ladies she used to work with.

>> No.9161453

>>9161426

It depends. There's like a gorillian different versions of Chinese style, but most have the same basic rules, minus a few differences. However, like the No.9161433 anon said, no dora tiles, no dead wall, more "points" to be earned, etc. And the Flowers and Season tiles work like the North from 3player. Also, I'm interested in this story.

>>9161436

American Mahjongg is a crock of shit. It's basically Mahjong combined with cribbage and hearts. And instead of knowing hands like poker hands, you have to buy a card every single year that has the year's legal hand combinations.

And they tell you how to make them down to a tee. Like, they specifically go out of their way to say "Okay, this hand needs four 1 bamboos, and four 2 pins.", etc, etc. The card is like $8, and again, you have to buy one every year, cause they change that shit up to pray on old ladies.

Also, I hate american sets cause the tiles have a weird thickness that's hard to lift, and it always comes with these stupid racks that jack the price up by $60. Seriously, buddy. Stay far away.

http://www.sloperama.com/mahjongg/malaysian.html

Stick with riichii, it is much better. It is not luck dependent like hk/chinese style. Most of the time it depends on whether you get to draw flowers/animals or not.

can someone explain why they said in saki that everyone only making sequences would make it harder for saki to get kans?

>> No.9161509

>>9161506

It's an occult thing. They believe that if you discard tiles that make pairs from your own hand, it changes the luck of the tiles so that it's easier to make sequences. You can also do the reverse, discard only tiles that are part of sequences, and never take apart a pair to create a Triplet lucky streak.

>> No.9161526

>>9161509
that sounds dumb even for saki

>> No.9161542

>>9161506
A kan, being four of a kind, effectively walls off the possibility of other players making sequences with those tiles. By the same reasoning, making sequences prevents others from calling open kans, though you can't really do anything about closed kans.

I was watching a Shin Janki movie, and there was a bit where a guy says something about using this method to alter the flow of the game with your discards.

>> No.9161566

>>9161526

It's Occult vs. Digital. Digital believes only in hard, cold, statistics. Occult believes in "the flow of luck" or "Nagare". It's why in Akagi or Ten, you'll see them talking about how they lost once, so the flow wasn't in their favor, and now they have super shitty draws.

No, because when you're rolling dice you can't not get a six, which is pretty much what happens if someone happens to be using the tile(s) or if it/ they never come into play. You're shit out of luck and there's no definite way of knowing it and therefore "skill" is pretty much useless unless you have a six sense like Akagi, or you're a skilled cheater.

The only way the law of averages would apply to mahjong is if you played so many rounds per game that every possible hand became available to you, which is obviously impossible. Each individual game is highly dependent on random chance and how good your starting hands are, though your record across several games would be shaped by skill if you played enough games. I personally find it incredibly buttfrustrating to get wrecked in a game by a complete beginner due to nothing but luck so I don't even bother playing anymore.

I was only mentioning this since that's how you used to play, but it's just not viable anymore when you're against 3 players who'll do anything it takes to be the winner.

I also believe it takes even more skill to dodge everyone's waits while building your hand around them. It's hard enough that you usually can't do it with a closed hand, as you may have to discard already completed melds nad make up for it by calling.

Why are you playing as NoName by the way ? Tenhou's point system is harsh enough that it makes a decent substitute to playing for money. Of course it doesn't apply to 7447, but playing when you have something to lose is usually more fun.

Yeah, you're probably right. I've only ever played at an amateur level, so maybe my style is only good enough to beat scrubs.

Building hands while dodging waits may be a skill I don't have yet. Osamuko says to attack or defend 100%, without halfassing it, so I usually just do that. I think it's fairly dependent on luck, though - sometimes my hand will continue to progress on its own, even if I break up my completed sets. Other times I'll just have no safe tiles whatsoever.

I used to play with an ID, but I was much worse back then and didn't like losing so I stopped. Besides, as a NoName, people don't know what to expect from me. I think I'll register a new ID soon, though.

The way Tenhou works in the ranking lobby, you only lose points if you finish 4th. The penalty is huge and that's fine, but the point repartition is a bit weird in my opinion.

For instance if you're 5th dan you get +75/+30/0/-105 for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th place respectively. That means a behavior of 42% 2nd place and 58% 3rd place will let you go up fast but a behavior of 58% first place and 42% 4th place will make you go down. It gets worse at 6th dan where the average is supposed to be negative.

In the end the best outcome is doing a lot of 2nd/3rd places and I find that a bit silly. Also, even if you're playing for money, the "uma" rules (penalty/bonus based on your position), make it worth it to go from 4th to 3rd even if the difference is 100 points.

The rating (R1500, etc.) is based solely on your score and the ratings of who you play against. It's a form of ELO rating I think, the exact formula is on arcturus.

What's a bit weird is the point system which is used to get higher ranks (kyuu, dan) and access the higher "rooms" where everyone has a least a given rank.

The past two nights I've looked into how to play, and have been playing around on http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html . I'm trying to learn different yaku by reading my chart full of them and trying to get specific ones. Even though I always fail, it still makes me remember them. Though I don't end up learning the names... I just know that a certain "thing" is a yaku...

I've only played a bit so far and I notice I sit there for a long time just thinking about what I should do. But in videos I see of gameplay, it's as if every player is constantly aware of everything and the tiles just fly by. Am I a complete moron, or does everyone start off slow?

Though I've only ever won one hand so far, it's fun. Twice I've tried to go out but discovered I misread the conditions for a yaku. I love the feeling of waiting on just one tile, hoping it comes up. I can practically here tense music in my head.

Usually the pros are just following the "efficiant tile discard" path to make a quick hand. - If I don't need anymore points to finish first
- If my winning tile(s) has been discarded by someone currently in riichi or obviously in tenpai
- If I'm more likely to improve my hand than get a tsumo with my current hand (for instance, if my wait is 4,6 and getting 3 or 7 would give me pinfu). Another case is seven pairs : if I get tenpai but both possible waits are tiles between 3-7, I'd rather wait a wind/dragon already discard, "suji" 1/9 or the dora
- If the dora can enter my hand. That's mainly a defensive move since I don't want to be forced to discard a dora later on
- If my hand is trash and one or more players seems to have something big going on (hon/chin itsu is an easy one to notice, but pon of dora is just as scary)

All of this mainly applies to times when I'm not East. When I am, I might riichi on trash hands just to scare off the other players and hope for a draw. Also if I badly need points to get out of 4th place, I'll obviously riichi even where there's no direct point gain, hoping for ippatsu, tsumo or ura dora.

So, there's three things decided at the start of a match.

Buy-in rate
Starting rate
Uma

Buy-in and Uma are optional, but are usually used.

Buy-in rate functions like a pot, where you throw in a certain amount of money/points, and the winner gets that at the end. The standard is 30,000. Since the actual starting value of each player is 25,000, then the "pot" is 5,000 from each player, or 20,000 altogether.

At the end of the game, you score who came in what place. I'll use >>9177187
for reference numbers. So, we can see the place went like this:

A: 78,400
B: 22,800
C: 10,000
D:-11,200

In the case of a tie, you decide the seat order from whoever is in first place, or the original dealer. Technically, this means at the very start of the game, everyone's already placed from 1st to 4th by seat order.

Then do this: Round off all the scores to the nearest thousandth and then divide by said thousandth. Score > 6, round up. < 5, round down. Then drop off the Zero's.

A: 78
B: 23
C: 10
D:-12

Now, if you're playing with a buy-in rate, subtract the buy-in rate from the scores. So, -30,000 (or 30 since we're dealing with the scores here):

A: 48
B: -7
C:-20
D:-41* (my mistake earlier)

And then you add the pot bonus back into the person who placed first. 30-25 = 5. x4 = 20, so

A: 68
B: -7
C: -20
D: -41

The total by now should equal exactly zero if you add all four scores together. If they don't, you did something wrong. This is how they determine who to give what. In this case, B would owe A 7 units, C would owe 20, D 41, and A stands to gain 68 units total. You can decide at the start how much equals what. For instance, if you said 1 point = 50 cents, A-san would stand to gain $34. Etc, etc.

BUT, if you play with an Uma, the changes the score. Uma is generally two numbers, small and big. A 5/10 Uma I believe is the standard, but Tenhou plays with a huge ass 10/20 Uma. What you do with that is you adjust the final scores. You take the big number from 4th's score and give it to 1st. You take the small number from 3rd and give it to 4th. So with the 10/20 uma adjustin the score, you get this:

A: 88
B: 3
C: -30
D: -61

Look familiar? Now A-san walks off with $44 in his pocket, and B-chan just barely manages to get away unscathed with a $1.50 he's probably gonna spend on pocky.

The whole "never riichi with yakuman" mentality some people have goes too far. Especially with a standard wait suuankou, if mangan isn't enough, there is absolutely no reason not to riichi. You don't want anyone attacking in that situation or, to a lesser extent, to deal in. There are also other more rare situations such as super-early kokushi where riichi can be a good idea.

Generally speaking, though, it's correct. Don't riichi with yakuman tenpai unless you have a good reason to.

Since it's so easy to make an open tanyao, kuitan reduces the luck factor a lot in my opinion. If you draw a dangerous tile and don't want to discard it, you can usually give up your pair, make up for it with a call and keep a pair wait on the dangerous tile for instance. Also you can control the game more easily by consciously deciding whether you want a fast and cheap hand or a slow and heavy one.

It sucks against beginners since they tend to make the fastest hand without any reason but in 特上 I've never seen a single person queue for nashi, and I expect 鳳凰 is the same.

You shouldn't open your hand at least 66% of the time and in those cases, nashi changes absolutely nothing to the score. If anything, playing in nashi will increase hand values by forbidding the second (arguably first) cheapest hand from the game.

>> No.9178282

Oh wow, I see people here talk about being able to keep track of what other people discard and being able to predict what type of hand they're forming... I don't think I could ever do that, seeing as I have enough trouble looking at my own hand, trying to calculate the probability of getting certain tiles... maybe once I memorize all the yaku I'll get faster but I don't think I can compare with you guys!

So I've been playing single player mahjong because I only recently learned. But I've just been playing that crappy flash game linked earlier. Does anyone have any experience with "Touhou Unreal Mahjong"? I downloaded a torrent of it (apparently "3rd generation") and it works fine. I don't need to know Japanese to start a game, and I know kana well enough to actually play.

But there are lots of other options too, like unlocking characters. I downloaded an English patch (thmj.p) but I have no idea how to apply it! I've seen Youtube videos of the game as well, in English, but the game looked ever so slightly different... they might have been on a different version?

Does anyone know what to do?

What you dont realize is you have 4people on the table.
Not everyone there has got a mangan potential hand and they have to resort to shitty yakuhai or just pinfu fast hand.
What you gonna do when you are down 10000+ to the dealer because of a ippatsu and you need a big hands?
Take your sweet ass time building hand that will get cockblock?
red5 even out the luck by giving out more doras. Even a shitty open tanyao can be a dangerous hand with red doras and hidden dora pon.

>> No.9178310

>>9178285
I realize that very well, and I've been in situations where I need a huge upset to get out of 4th hundreds of times. And yes, when that happens, I bet on a riichi men-tan-pin iipeikou hoping for ippatsu, ura dora and the like. I should mention that I've never played nashi outside of 一般 because I wanted to avoid complete beginners and I'll go pon of dora tanyao only when I can, but I still consider open tanyao to be the kind of hand I do when I'm in first position and want the game to end quick, not when I'm in last.

Like you said, there are 4 people playing and I don't expect to win more than 25% of all hands. That means 75% of the time I have no problem giving up my hand and going into defense. I also don't expect to finish 1st more than 30% of the time and won't bet everything on some unlikely hand when I can silently make a pinfu only and finish 2nd.

10,000 points in not a lot by the way, a mangan is nothing special.

>>9178183
I remember downloading that once, and every character had a super power of some sort. It made the game a lot of fun, but you won't learn mahjong with this, although I suspect there's also a regular play mode. Can't help you with the patch, I only did a couple of games at the time.

>> No.9178325

>>9178282
I have no experience with that Touhou game, but I'm guessing it probably has some crazy powers that'll rape statistics and probability, so if you want to practice you'd be better off with something else.

Anyway, calculating your chances of getting a certain tile usually just boils down to how many of them have already been discarded. Sometimes you can also make further rudimentary judgments about what might be discarded, like if there are already a lot of tiles in that area that have already been dealt.

I expect that pros can probably guess what tiles their opponents are holding and take that into consideration when calculating probabilities. I'd like to be able to do that, but it really is a lot to think about in the middle of a fast-paced game.

I can't recommend a specific single player game, but you should consider playing against other players. Even if the AI neither sucks not cheats, you'll never get the feeling that you've tricked someone into doing something against a computer. Mahjong is no poker, but it's still part of the game.

Tenhou's first room has a lot of beginners and watching better players will probably be good advice. So long as you know the rules, you'll be fine.

Most people will have some notion of defense, so you can usually exploit that to win hands. Make pair/shanpon waits on 1 or 9 and discard 4 or 6 respectively before calling riichi. 3rd wind or dragon also works fine.

From the 10th turn onwards, try to keep a completely safe tile in your hand in case someone calls riichi. Never ever throw a random tile when someone just called riichi. After that, if you're at least ryanshanten (2 away from tenpai), you should probably go full defense and not even try to win. Try to notice when people go for hon/chin itsu since that's so common. When they do, just stop dealing that color completely, especially if they can chii you.

Keep a silent tenpai for everything else and people won't take notice. Also, be satisfied when you're not 4th. There's a lot more I suppose, but the more you play the better you'll get.

The bitch across from me calls kan on it which pisses me off. But it works in my favor, because my 6sou (I think that's what it's called?) is now dora as well!

And what did I draw the next turn?

I'm usually not lucky in anything so I was pretty happy. That wasn't a lot of points, but by the time the entire game was over, I rose to 2nd place. Sure, they're only computer players, but it was exciting. I can only imagine online play will be much more fun.
