Hi, sorry, I did not mean like a wage. It was in a internet cafe in Kuala Lumpur. Obviously it was by word of mouth only, but they said I could get money for posting comments on that website. When I asked why I was told that his dad was paying for it and he was a very rich man. It was 3RM per hour and they said that the fee would also be paid for. A very good deal when you are poor, free internet and you only have to work for 15 minutes a day to get money. I no longer live in Malaysia however.

But you're missing the point. These businesses were doing fine supporting themselves before, there's no need to suddenly shift to the american 'gotta make more profit' mentality. It doesn't do any good for the culture itself, it only profits a select few individuals.

This over-capitalism shit has gone way too far. Look at anime, 30 series every season and all of them fighting to get noticed because you can bet 25 of them will be forgotten by the next year. It means shit has to be rushed out of the doors and profit has to keep turning over. And what do we see as a result? Constant 12 episode gimmicky series that get thrown out when the next season comes around. Manga-ka quitting because of shitty work conditions, so instead they hold LN competitions and adapt shitty ideas submitted by people who can't write.

It just cheapens everything because there is more focus on making a profit rather than actually making something worthwhile and to be proud of.

Sure, take it to Shibuya and make money out of whatever the fuck you want, but keep it out of akihabara and 'otaku culture'. Quality will always be better than quantity. Look at Touhou; made by a single person, massively popular, fun and well liked among otaku, enough merchandise and doujin goods to keep everyone happy. There's no need for some huge nameless corporation to stick it's oar in and make money. The only reason they're here now is because there's a decent profit to be made; when that vanishes they'll have moved on to the next fad.

You don't think Touhou has been capitalized? It was popularized has an indie game, sure. And "shooter + little girls" was a great hook that actually was underlied with nice music and a storyline. Making it an interesting idea, into a popular one. After that Touhou was capitalized and now it has it's own merchandise, convention, several anime adaption (attempts) and a fucking mountain of doujinshi.

It doesn't have to be a VN or 4koma adaption to be capitalized. It just so happened that Zun had enough clout to be able to have his own way, since they had to come to HIM and it's not just one writer begging to get his story published.

Touhou hasn't been capitalized at all because doujin works are the backbone of otaku culture as you know it. Figures, Dakimakura, Posters, animation tapes etc. all started off as doujin goods.

Touhou may be stupidly popular and have a ton of irritating fans, but ZUN holds his ground against corporate bullshit. You've seen how he comes down hard on places that try to take it too far. Obviously there are people out there who make a retarded amount of money off of selling Touhou doujins and goods, but compared to any other series with even a quarter of its popularity, I can guarantee you that Touhou is not turning nearly as much profit per fan, for anyone.

I only encourage people to try and support indie movements that interest them and they believe if. Even non-financially. There are so many projects that end up failing because there is no support behind them. Some with so much promise.

Toranoana is a small doujin shop though at it's roots.

Not to mention any company that is allowed to sell Touhou goods will of course be using them as a tool to make profit just as they would any popular stock.

It's not the fact it's being sold, it's the fact that it isn't being totally exploited for money.

ZUN could quite easily make mega fucking bucks from touhou, any studio would adapt an 'official' televised anime of it given the popularity and it'd sell like hotcakes. But he doesn't, because he understands the importance of the doujin scene. The doujin market keeps anime alive because it gives the fans a voice, once you take that away you turn 'otaku culture' into just another Hollywood - where only those who have money and influence get their work out to the people, and the only voting you get to do is with your wallet.
