Why does Reimu want donations? What would she do with money?

Shines want donations so they can know people give a shit about them. Also /jp/ is pretty terrible right now.

Obtain food for herself and supplies to keep the shrine from falling over.
She runs the whole place by herself, it can be very taxing. Rest of the cast are either wealthy, under the employment of a wealthy youkai, or loners that don't require much more than some collected food to get by.
And Moriya Shrine is a lot more popular/successful, they don't run in the red like Hakurei.

Make a huge pile in the shrine and sleep in it, like the European dragons of fantasy.

Or just pay off her tab.

Well yea not thats saying much though. If the goddesses actually live at the shrine no shit people rather go there.

She leads a depressing life.

I wouldn't put it that way. Reimu is more like a girl that leads a boring life, that frequently becomes entertaining when she finds some youkai to exterminate. She can get too crazy sometimes (see Aya's interview with Letty).

Actually, they do run in the red. They get by by selling goods they brought from the outside world to kappa.

You're not asking the right question. The right question is:

Who prints/mints money in Gensokyo?

Shrines need maintenance. Shrine maidens need food.

Both cost money.

They run on a feudal economy like in Spice & Wolf.
Human Village minted coins are the most trusted currency in Gensokyo.

Sounds plausible.
