Tenshi, because she can cause earthquakes and completely devastate Gensokyo if she wants. She have lived long enough to be able to become a celestial. Not only that, but Tenshi has a strong bond with Iku, and I'm pretty sure that she would help Tenshi against a possible fight with Youmu.
Youmu might have two very strong swords, but still they don't compare to the power of a celestial who managed to cause a catastrophe in Gensokyo.

It's pretty clear that Tenshi has the higher powerlevel, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she's more skilled with swordplay.

None of this has to do with swords.

Did Samurai ever actually use their long katana and their short katana at the same time?

Cause swordsmen in the west would sometimes dual wield longswords and daggers.

Of course dual wielding full length swords is something that no real fighter has ever done.

Miyamoto Musashi invented the Niten Ichi Ryu style that many kenjutsu disciples use. He has not been recorded using it himself on another samurai though it probably has been done.

Rapier + stellato

Dual wielding full length swords against another real fighter is something no real fighter has done and lived through

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

Holy shit you bought a katana for 20000 fucking dollars that suddenly makes you a sword master because you can spend money

Master Japanese smiths fold steel over a long period of time to refine the steel, increase carbon content, etc. Modern methods, though lacking in love, are more efficient ways of doing so. A sword is an outdated weapon unfortunately.

The katana is the finest sword in human history, sharp, elegant, perfect. But it cannot bisect, a fucking knight in fucking full plate, that is ridiculous even for the sharpest katana in the world. The laws of physics don't permit it.

Read a history book. The samurai were slaughtered. Europe never gave a shit for a long time and when they did it wasn't the samurai who defeated them. On the contrary they were defeated by japanese imperials with guns. I'm sure in WW2 US marines aimed for japanese soldiers, not an aristocracy that had been dead for hundreds of years. There were like 4 soldiers who used katanas, everyone else were using bayonets.

hey man, great sword and all, but don't over exaggerate before studying this up.

Obviously the majority of soldiers used guns (duh) but swords were far from uncommon even in the Pacific. Many Japanese officers had swords intended for actual military use, which saw action in the same capacity that any other trench knife would.

I was speaking of katanas specifically. Many of them sctually adopted european military sabers, but in the jungles and barren mountains of the pacific theate in the 1940's you're not going to see a japanese officer in his fancy uniform strolling around with his flashy sword that he should probably not use against semi-automatic rifles.

Hey Gaijin,

My name is Katana, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are pale, dishonorable, devils who spend every second of their day looking at stupid ass longswords. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever bisected any European Knights? I mean, I guess it's fun making me underpowered in d20 because of your own insecurities, but you all take it to a whole new level. This is even worse than being too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai.

Don't be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I'm pretty much perfect. I can cut slabs of solid steel, and I'm thrice as sharp as European swords. What can you brag about, other than "targeting the men with the katanas first in World War II"? I also scared medieval Europe into leaving Japan alone, and have a banging honorable wielder (He just cleaned me; Shit was SO cash). You are all ignorant devils who should just commit seppuku. Thanks for listening.

Okay, so they weren't really katanas, but the Japanese did mass-produce military swords based on traditional Japanese weapons. Obviously they wouldn't be used in open-ground warfare where you can see people a mile off but a lot of people were killed at melee range in WWII, inside fortifications or foxholes or banzai charges or whatever else have you.

>>9115629
There are a lot of sergeants in the army. I don't know if corporals had them too but I wouldn't be too surprised. Japan probably had more swords than mortars.

>> No.9115679

>>9115659
if you're a sergeant you're not going to be carrying a sword around. they were not based on japanese traditional swords they were intended to be replications of european sabers. in melee range, ask any "expert swordsman' which draws faster and is easier to carry: pistol, knife, family heirloom katana that requires constant cleaning especially in humid environments

>if you're a sergeant you're not going to be carrying a sword around.
Unless you're in the Imperial Japanese Army.

>family heirloom katana that requires constant cleaning especially in humid environments
These were not family heirlooms. They were mass-produced, machine-made weapons made for killing people. The defining feature of a saber is the guard and they didn't have them.

>So it's not a katana? Like I was saying before
I'm pretty sure they were unless part of the definition of katana is the traditional forging method, which I don't think it is. You insist that they were actually modeled after European sabers, which I see no indication of.

Give me a picture of a japanese sergeant in ww2 carrying a sword in combat.

Their whole military was based on Western Militaries. The whole meiji reform was for westernization. The death of the samurai marked westernization. Katanas were not used in WW2, if so, then only very rarely since no soldier would bring that sort of weapon into a modern combat situation.

On a side note, youmu is best touhou
