Ok, /jp/.

I'm in need of a crash course on Touhou. Is there anything you can tell me about the characters and events?

The main character is Reimu Hakurei.

Whenever an incident arises, she flies around and beats people up until the incident goes away.

Incidents vary from the mundane, such as, "someone has stolen the moon," to the extraordinary, such as "somebody is trying to feed spring to a tree."

The people who are beaten up include both dastardly perpetrators and innocent bystanders, and between those that's everybody.

I was in a similar position to you, OP, a few months back. A simple method is to just pick up a couple games, play them, and then go to the wiki to learn more about the characters you saw. Once you know a few characters you'll gain momentum, and everything will come in time. You don't even have to play the games well, just well enough to meet the characters.

Did you install the English patch for whatever game you're playing...?

How can you not know who you're fighting? It TELLS you... just work through the games, remember everyone's name (which is REALLY easy if you play it anywhere near the number of times to complete it in one continue) and contribute to threads that reference characters you know about - in your case, obviously Cirno.

Also, lurk and don't stand out like a sore thumb like here.

Well, the thing is that the GM caters to the touhou-familiar audience in that he often drops hints and such that someone that knows touhou would get instantly. Meanwhile, I'm in the dark.

Though everything about the CYOA is great, I'm particularly fascinated with how the characters are examining their conflicting styles of magic. I don't suppose magic systems are actually explained in the slightest in touhou proper, but I'd still like to have the expected familiarity that the rest of the audience has as well.

I don't have any examples from the 20 threads marked anywhere (I'm a rather recent addition to the audience), but I'll try to make an example. Let's say that Reimu just flew by. He might say something like:

A blur of red flashes by as a girl with black hair soars above you.

And then a character might comment something like:

"Oh no, there she goes again, off using fights to solve all her problems."

And I have no idea who it is.
