It's not like I dislike 3D, real girls can be very beautiful, but the way the lighting and styles work it seems weird in all the wrong ways. In real life your eye is quite adept at picking up what's normal and what's bizarre. When I see cosplay I see a simple 2D outfit stretch and mis-shapen with unsightly angels and splotches of random color as shadows and light fight to control how the outfit should look and that's competing with the highly complex features of the human body. It's like an abomination, every cosplay outfit looks like a constant battle to me, two sides of a magnet wanting to be naturally repelled and yet unnaturally being made to fit snug next to each other.

Beautiful girls look ugly when they cosplay, beautiful outfits look ugly when cosplayed, it's unsightly to the eyes and just fucking gross.

This is the problem I have too. The colours and costumes don't work in the real world with real human beings. That's why they usually look like pantomime costumes rather than what a half-ghost swordswoman would actually wear.

There was a big thread about this on /co/ a while back, because everyone was upset with the black leather costumes all superheroes got in movies. But the fact is that Wolverine's bright yellow costume looks great and pretty badass in the colourful world of comic books, but in real life he'd look like someone who half-assed his costume for the local gay club's Animal Night.

It's sort of like fashion in the 1980's. It looks really cool and stylish in 2D like Jojo and various old cartoons, but in real life it was horrific and one of the most repulsive periods in the history of civilization in terms of fashion.

When it comes to cosplay I think the best thing to do is use a bit of creativity and talent to adapt and interpret the 2D oufit into something that looks acceptable to the eye. It's the difference between a Halloween shop pirate costume and say, Jack Sparrow's personal costume from the pirate movies. One sticks out like a sore thumb and the other has something almost natural about it. I think for Youmu you would have to find a real uniform to adjust and tailor. There's a cornicopia of selections of western and eastern school uniforms, and I'm sure there's bound to be one close enough to what ZUN was going for when he drew Youmu for the first time. The green might be a drabber or more muted shade of green but it can still work.
