It's the same. Everything with electronic bubblepop music and shit.

The difference is that JPOP idols only focus on Japan, and they don't plan to expand worldwide.

Look at KPOP idols, they sometimes start on different countries where they risk success. (WonderGirls had a great start, ended shortly following US tour).

And KPOP idols are a dime a dozen. Almost every month, there's a new group in town. Manufactured looks, with one special member to stand out. Sometimes not being able to sing/dance as well as others, a mascot character perhaps.

Also, KPOP idols have slave contracts vs JPOP idols wherein they can quit anytime (on a group) but not easily on an agency.

Did anybody read the actual article ???

He is right because AKB48 appeals to the otaku and not the mainstream in Japan. But because of the success of formula of AKB48 which is fueled by the obsessive nature of otaku (by buying multiple copies of a single/album), AKB48 has become amazingly successful sales-wise but it is still not the mainstream. So other companies want the same success as AKB48, so they follow the same formula of AKB48 appealing to this 'niche' of fans bringing j-pop further away from the Japanese mainstream (and the mainstream of the world)

That is why J-pop has absolutely no appeal outside of Japan.

Let me ask you one thing: Is your entire knowledge of AKBs fanbase based on OPs article? Because they do have a shitload of teenage girls as fans who think they're cool as fuck and admire them. And no, the blatant sexualization doesn't put them off, much like Britney Spears blatant sexualization didn't put female fans off back in the days. They're the same as early 00's Morning Musume or Perfume at this point, once you have a idol group that gets big success and is featured heavily in the mainstream media they'll get hordes of teenage fans simply for the "it's popular so it's cool" factor. Hell, even a group like Momoiro Clover Z is now getting them, despite being much more fringe compared to AKB.

What irony? I am not comparing idol pop music to death metal, (c)rap, country, or whatever 'music' you like.

I am comparing pop music to other pop music and all 'pop' music no matter in the East or West is manufactured. Guess what ... I dont have a problem with that because I like 'pop'. Uh, no... The schoolgirl look has been co-opted by uniform fetishists for years. Which, by the way, AKB48 has played up in a number of ways with a number of different uniforms. This is hardly lolicon. Not to mention the majority of the idols are obviously physically demonstrative of women not little girls. Get a sense of the old and the new. Start with AKB48 and Hello Project stuff. You can Google both of those and learn all the basic shit.

Eventually, a unit or a particular idol will endear itself to you more than the others and you'll probably start to want to know more stuff, trivia, fun facts about them.

I know a lot of people will hate me for saying this but Hello Online! has the best tracker for new videos and you can check out almost everything that comes out overseas including concert performances, music videos and albums and singles.

You obviously have a very broad definition otaku, because the videos show people of all age groups and genres.
It seems that to you everyone who is a fan of an idol group and attends their events is obviously an otaku of the worst kind, which just proves you know fuck all.

Most Japanese dislikes AKB48 and K-Pop.

AKB48 = K-Pop = Dentsu (ad agency)

How terrible, someone actually having the bright idea of advertizing oneself.

Why can't they do it like the rest of world, who doesn't have to rely heavily on well-know music labels, influential entertainment gurus and expensive publicity and guerrilla concerts...

Oh wait...

BBC did a story about K-pop a while ago actually

J-Pop used to be churned out idols and seiyuus who thought they could make it big in the world of music by putting on some clothes and singing, they were disposed of with ease in a matter of months.

K-Pop was pretty much exactly the same, they saw how much money the Japanese market was making and copied them.

But J-Pop is better because aside from all the shitty churned out stuff, there are lots of good artists with good tracks that put pop music in every other corner of the world to shame.

Everything Japanese is on a nosedive in recent years.

Anime feels watered down, J-Pop is especially watered down. Shitty light novels which are basically made for anime with ridiculous titles are being churned out.

Even all my favorite western bands have gone to shit. I'm talking the past 3 years or so here, no nostalgia nonsense, just a genuine decay of creativity everywhere.

Sounds like depression.

One of my favorite bands released an album in 2009ish when things started plummeting, it was very weak and the fans complained. Then a couple of years later they released another album basically admitting that the last album sucked and that this one would be a return to their roots.

It used the same production techniques, guitar effects and so on as their original popular stuff but it completely lacked soul and everyone noticed it. Now they're pretty much depressed, not updating their twitter and trying to do gigs featuring songs only from their old popular albums.

I won't say which band, because it's embarassing and not /jp/. But really...I think people have just given up being creative, nobody can get inspired anymore.

That almost sounds like my favourite band. At least my favourite singer (part of that band) is still capable of writing good songs.
