Because it's similarly fucked up by ignoring fucking everything about the language and how it works by just doing machine substitution of chunks.

But why argue. Here's an object lesson of how Cudder works.

>そんな顔をしてくれるのは
>To have such a face
>この家ではこの人だけだ--
>It's only this person at this house
>誰かの笑顔が温かい
>Someone's smiling face is warm

That's OCN. Would you look at that. And genial's the last dictionary definition for 温かい. God only knows why he did that. Probably because he thought non-verbs could just be substituted for any of their meanings so set the automatic feeder to just pick one at random.

Cudder I used to support your efforts. I even defended your projects when neigh everybody was criticizing you, Retrans and the translators you work with. Unfortunately you have completely lost my confidence and I can no longer support your projects, or accept your them as being legitimate translations of visual novels.

Now, you may think Flyable Heart project was acceptable, but it wasn't. It read atrociously and was obviously translated by a translator with a very limited grasp of proper English. Now you may say well at least he tried. However this is a disaster for anyone hoping to eventually see a 'real translation' of this visual novel. Having been 'translated' and I use that term loosely, this visual novel is less likely to be picked up by a translation group and properly translated in the future.

Now, you're from Russia / or of Russian origin correct? Well imagine you had to read your favorite book in mangled Russian. To the point where you felt the translator was completely and utterly destroying your favorite book, with mangled, often incomprehensible Russian, which read badly and made the book lose its appeal completely. That is the Flyable Heart translation project for an English reader.

For me Flyable Heart was no big loss, but for someone it was something they looked forward too and they were met with disappointment. I ask that you not release any more visual novels without ensuring the quality of the translation and please maintain a minimum of editing/proofing by someone competent to do so.

>> No.9074892

>>9074888
cont.

Otherwise your group will just continue to release monstrosities of visual novel translation, which far from helping the community, hinder it and do not please fans, just disappoint them. Such translation projects reflect badly on yourself and your company Retrans, as they facilitate and encourage poor quality translation of visual novels.

I say this not to give you a hard time, but in the hope that your group will decide to alter the way in which you conduct your business.

Kind Regards, Anon

I neither care for nor need your support. If your complaining is about the translation then that is beyond our responsibilities as a service provider. Implying that we should to do anything is like telling your ISP to censor sites that *you* don't like, and as a strong supporter of free speech we cannot do that. "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

>Having been 'translated' and I use that term loosely, this visual novel is less likely to be picked up by a translation group and properly translated in the future.
Again, whether or not anyone else wants to try doing a better translation is not our problem. [The original translator is going to be trying that for the SP, but if you want to or know someone who does want to do so, then please do let us know.]

First of all that's a big part of why I learned English --- to take advantage of the large amount of material in it. I've had the same experiences in English (pic related), but why complain? A translation you have to work at to understand is better than nothing at all, and as the saying goes, "anything is a long way from nothing." It should also be mentioned that many of these experiences involved much more crucial things than consumer entertainment, where a wrong translation can cause a release of "magic smoke".

Looking at the dates on the files FH was out for almost 2 years before someone was willing to translate it, so if there wasn't that translator those wanting to read it would've probably still not been able to, and may have just looked for something else. Remember that this is entertainment we're dealing with, where new is important and the "audience" loses interest quickly.

The general impression outside of 4chan of FHTRANS has been mostly positive --- we're about to hit 43K downloads on the RTM. But as I said above, this stuff is all volatile and not of much value. That's why we're not expecting to see many new adopters of the SP when it comes out.

>I say this not to give you a hard time, but in the hope that your group will decide to alter the way in which you conduct your business.
We're not going to change anything. Our goal is not to please self-entitled individuals like you. We will continue providing freely accessible, fully managed services for everyone who is interested in starting their own translation project but does not want to handle the technical aspects.

I suppose I would consider it as a last resort for a game I really, really wanted to translate, but I'm uncomfortable with his approach for a number of reasons.

Mainly: hackers don't get to run translation projects, and they certainly don't get to keep the tools and scripts to themselves and force me to work through their interface. When I'm doing 95% of the work on a project, I do not want to be at his mercy in that way, especially when it's someone who appears to be borderline mentally unstable and prone to kicking people off "his" projects.

The remaining hacking issues which were above my skill level were never really dealt with and the people we outsourced those parts to spaced on us for months. By this point even if we get that out of the way, the translator isn't going to be able to do the entire thing before leaving for Japan in September. It's really not worth trying to rush out a full translation on something the size of ST in ~3 months and the quality could very well suffer due to that. Furthermore, we all find it highly unlikely she'll be doing any translation while overseas either, so that's out. As to your point about things needing to be new to be translated, I think the visual novel translation scene has proven that statement wrong any number of times. Plenty of older games get translated.

Comparing censorship and quality control, really... really how does this even make sense to you, please explain your reasoning on that. That is one hell of a leap between arguments. You should change your statement to "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death my right to provide poorly translated visual novels, without quality control, to hell that I'm ruining the chances of that visual novel receiving proper translation and disregarding the audience of said visual novel".

That's really on the translator. The engine is still completely in Japanese so it'd be largely unplayable once gameplay hits anyway. I don't have any access right now to anything besides a handful of tools I tinkered around with, a few test scripts that contain no real translation, and a couple subbed movie files.

It's probably best to assume any work done on this has vanished into that big open void where all progress goes once something goes belly up.

But it's probably for the best. To my knowledge the project hasn't moved much since it was announced months ago. Now that it's completely beyond hope due to our time limit, we're pretty much abandoning any plans for it. Rather than let it stagnate on lists like this and become a running gag like so many projects before.

>> No.9083425

A combination of both. We could get the script working, but everything had to be hex'd in as it stood. Super annoying to handle and an absolute nightmare due to the fact that the lines for certain conversations are spread across multiple "macro" files. This is before we even get into the usual BS to sift through when dealing with VN scripts, which is even more annoying when you're doing things the long and fairly stupid way. Editing this sucker would have been a clusterfuck of epic proportions. We contacted some people about getting a better method of script insertion running. That was about 4 months ago. We then contacted some other people. About 2 months ago. Thus far, haven't heard a thing. The script itself largely worked fine due to us swiping a lot of work from the Russian version, which enables better character spacing, english language characters, and, best of all, proper line breaks. All you have to do is copy the executable to the folder and overwrite the japanese version. A couple tweaks here and there and you have something presentable. Good news for anyone picking it up, I guess. All you really need is a good grasp of how to get scripts out. Sadly, my abilities in that area are sorely lacking.

We've also run into some major gameplay related bugs. Specifically the images involved in various aspects of the gameplay involve transparencies. While we did come across a tool that allowed us to get into the image file packs (a chinese tool called RPGViewer, specifically version 3.0), the whole thing got horribly lopsided once we tried inserting anything that wasn't a large static image (IE: chapter title splash screens and backgrounds). I should add that we don't really have any image editing done to speak of because of this, so we're still way behind on that end too.

Honestly, I can't blame them. Even if eroge devs made their games available to the West officially, they might sell a few more copies, but it would put them at risk of another Rapelay incident. It's better for the Japanese companies if eroge stays underground in the West, and from that standpoint, it makes sense that they'd be nervous about fan translations that won't really get them any additional sales anyway.

TL;DR: At best, they have nothing to gain from it. At worst, they get a lot of headaches and fires to put out.
