My bird died a months ago, it was one of these i think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar
Here's the story:

My family loves birds and bought a couple of these, a yellow female and a blue-ish male. I didnt really care about them, when you got closer to them they started to yell (or what does bird do) and hide in their small house.
One day, i noticed my mother sad and told me that the two birds escaped somehow. When i went to check if the other birds had food i heard something moving in the house of the birds that escaped. It was a little bird with white feathers mostly, crying and scratching one corner of the house with his/her small beak. I knew i had to take care of that bird, i mean... it was all alone, didnt knew how to eat or drink water.
For the next days i fed him with some kind of pasta i bought in a store, it has to be made with warm water and then put in a syringe (withouth the needle of course, you know, the one for some medications) and literally force the little bird to eat from there.
After a month or two i think, the bird was full of yellow feathers, he learned how to eat small seeds and drink water and it was all good. It was like a normal bird, sadly, it couldnt fly because i couldnt teach it, but still, everytime he was about to fall from a high place or something he oppened up his wings and tried to fly, making him just fall slower actually.

It was all good, i loved it, my family loved it, even the dog we have liked the little bird.
Then i had to go to back to my university and i knew i couldnt bring the bird with me, and my family said they will take care of him until i return. Every week i asked my mother/father how was the bird and they told me he was fine, he gets on people shoulders and stay there, or just fuck arround without being scared like his parents.
Then came that tragic day. My family came to visit me after i took the normal monthly test for my carrer, and i had to ask: How's the bird? (i didnt really put a name on it, im really bad at it) They told me they found it dead one morning and something like: I dont really know how to say this in english He couldnt eat one of those sunflower seeds and choked(?). From that moment i knew i killed him, i shouldnt let them take care of it, it was my bird, it was my responsabilty. The little bird was like... only 4months old, it was just a baby and i killed it by letting someone else take care of it.

Why am i writting this? because these japanese birds threads remind me of my bird. My beloved bird.

No, im not from australia, im from south america
