Do you ever feel disconnected from reality when you leave your computer, /jp/?

I keep getting this strange feeling and it's starting to scare me. Sometimes when I'm away from the computer everything just doesn't feel real. It's like my eyes are just displaying the scenery to a video game when I look around and things don't feel real unless I'm using the computer.

It's hard to put it into words. There's just this creepy sensation of everything not feeling real, kind of like that strange feeling you get when you realize that you're dreaming.

I've had pretty bad disorientation and distortion of perception of existence, since I went through a fairly long phase of drug use when I was a teenager. I even had it when I was a kid from thinking to much about what perception of existence is.

Some people call it depersonalization, I personally just don't like labels.

Dubito, ergo sum.
I exist, so I know at least one thing exists.
I perceive, and so I know that something is acting upon me (even if that thing is myself).
I know that I do not think in a perfectly logical, consistent manner.
I know that what I perceive to be my surroundings does exist coherently and logically.
Therefore, either "reality" exists entirely separate of my mind, and I perceive it - or reality is a distinctly different form of thought completely removed from my conscious imaginings, and which I cannot control as I can my own thoughts.
Since the latter is no different than the former, in terms of what is possible/impossible, the matter becomes trivial - what we perceive ought be treated the same way.
However, I have no reason to think that the world is nothing but a manifestation of imagination. I can doubt things, but until there is a reason to do so, isn't it better to use the model that fits what is observed? If repeated observation isn't enough to dispel doubts, and if the doubts turned out to be correct, but the nature of experience of life didn't change - what's the point of doubting needlessly?
Descartes originally doubted everything to see if there was something that could be capital-K-Known - and he came to the conclusion that he existed.
I'm okay with not Knowing, as long as my beliefs are consistent, rational, and effective.

I used to get that a lot back when I smoked a lot of marijuana and indulged in psychedelics. I still get them after long gaming sessions.

Alas, it's as real as it ever will be. I would suggest you get some therapy if it's a chronic issue, or just remind yourself that it IS real though it feels otherwise. Take a breather from the computer every now and then for a drink or snack. Brew yourself some nice tea and take it easy, then get back into it.

>SYMPTOMS OF DEPERSONALIZATION

Depersonalization disorder symptoms include:

--Continuous or recurring feelings that you're an outside observer of your thoughts, your body or parts of your body
--Numbing of your senses or responses to the world around you
--Feeling like a robot or feeling like you're living in a dream or in a movie
--The sensation that you aren't in control of your actions, including speaking
--Awareness that your sense of detachment is only a feeling, and not reality

Other symptoms can include:

--The sense that your body, legs or arms appear distorted, enlarged or shrunken
--Feeling like you are observing yourself from above, as if you were floating in the air
--Feeling emotionally disconnected from people you care about

While episodes of depersonalization may last only a short time, some people with depersonalization disorder have episodes that last hours, days, weeks or even months at a time. In some people these episodes turn into ongoing feelings of depersonalization that may periodically get better or worse.

>CAUSES OF DEPERSONALIZATION

Feeling of depersonalization may:

--Begin with no apparent trigger
--Start after a life-threatening event, such as an accident or assault
--Be triggered by fear of having another depersonalization experience

With depersonalization disorder, feelings of depersonalization aren't directly caused by drugs, alcohol or a medical condition. However, depersonalization may be triggered by stress or trauma, and it often occurs along with other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression or schizophrenia. In some cases, it starts suddenly without an apparent cause.

While the exact cause of depersonalization disorder isn't well understood, it appears to be linked to an imbalance of certain brain chemicals (neurotransmitters).

I have the same symptom as OP, but I'm not anxious nor do I feel down when it happens.
It's quite the opposite. I feel highly euphoric as if nothing could stop me anymore. As if I was god looking down on the world.

The only downside is that I start to grin and laugh uncontrollably. I also take big risk without regard to their consequences.

>--Continuous or recurring feelings that you're an outside observer of your thoughts, your body or parts of your body

I felt literally like if I was disconnected from reality.

My uncle has schizophrenia so maybe that has something to do with that.

>>9031176
I doubt it's anything like schizophrenia. It sounds like it's just mild dissociation. Unless it happens all the time, I think it's fairly normal. It's natural to feel detached after focusing intensely or heavily on something for an extended amount of time.
