Why is it that you have to shoot the boss like 900 bajillion times to kill them but if you get hit by a single stray danmaku you lose a life........these games make no sence.

To put it as simply as possible, you aren't hitting them. You're doing the same thing they're doing: firing a curtain of bullets. When they feel the pressure, they use a bomb to escape temporarily called a "spellcard". You use the same damn thing. You don't actually hit them until they lose. This would be extremely hard to simulate accurately and extremely boring too, so it's done the same as any other shooter.

What Yuuka does at 1:29 is the best depiction of a spellcard activation I ever saw animated. A spellcard is a visually impressive bullet pattern that keeps going while you're free to move about and fire your own shots.

The characters you get to use are ridiculously overpowered according to canon, in most cases.

If you think it's unfair, you should play PoFV.

It really isn't, you have a lot more bombs/lives than any single character in the game, except maybe extra bosses.
