can I improve by playing single player mahjong? I feel like I'm not making progress randomly clicking and hoping the tsumo button shows up on tenhou. mainly I want to work on setting up waits and increasing the speed I can analyze hands.

what about strip mahjong games?

You should just play normal games with other people, or try other mahjong game rather than the single player Tenhou (Like Touhou mahjong). Problem is that Tenhou bots just drops the tiles, they don't ever bother. You won't improve much with that. Then again, it's better just to practice with other people.

Hi there Chairs.

Touhou mahjong is a good way to go but could be difficult on the highest rounds because of the changed rules.

Eitherway please play with the fellow /jp/sies on http://tenhou.net/0/?L7447 or if you're searching for a better mahjong client play janryumon.

If you just "randomly clicking and hoping the tsumo button shows up on tenhou" you obviously don't even know the rules, so go read a pdf or something explaining it...there are tons out there.

I know the rules but since I'm a beginner it takes me a long time to analyze my hand and shit. I was thinking a single player game that had unlimited time for turns would let me practice better than panicking on tenhou and discarding tiles at random.

I managed to get a baiman playing with some /a/ssholes last night, but I was pretty lucky.

Try to get a hold of "A Mah Jong Handbook" by Eleanor Noss Whitney. It's helped me immensely.

Never play 3player. Ever. It will make you not understand the game and think that the goal is to win, when it is actually to never place 4th.

>> No.8917523

For single player practice and more relaxed than tenhou multiplayer, try "mahjong fight club" for the DS, also known as #0731 ;)

Once you know how to play, tenhou's pretty much the place.

I wasn't playing 3 player. I had pinfu iipeiko junchan, and got lucky with iipatsu and reverse dora.

does it have drills like how there are mate problems for chess?

Not really, only insofar as she provides examples here and there. The sections on offensive and defensive strategy are where the meat is, so to speak.

Tenhou want you to believe that it is ok as long as you place second.
But that is wrong, always aim for first with the highest score that you can gain. That is the whole point of playing mahjong, winning!
Think of 25000 as $25. Of course sometimes you need to cut your loss and not end up at -100.

that only applies if you are playing in their pointing rank system however, that strategy will not work if you have played over 1000 games and have not paid for premium account. it's pay to win stupid.

is a 20 fu 2 han hand better than a 40 fu 1 han hand?
