It's the latter. There's some skills which are similar to DotA heroes, obviously, but the map is stupidly different.

I've always wanted to play this with people, but I don't know how people play with pirated WC3 online. What version of the map do you guys play?

Same thing happened to my D2 copy but apparently my brother ended up taking it with him when he moved and I ended up finding it there. What an asshole.

At least it's now saved on my Blizzard account so I -can't- lose it.

I sucked at Warcraft 3, but it was still really fun, even if I lost most of the time...

Man I fucking loved those custom games.
I can't remember most of the names but some were really well made.

Touhou Arena was a lot of fun, too. I recommend that over the Touhou DotA which is most likely imbalanced.

Oh, WorldEditor in WC3 was great. You could do almost anything, map like dota can take less than a month to make.

Though I think map editor in SC2 must be a lot better, why people still give a fuck about wc3?
