Really, especially with Japanese rice, it's hard to mess up by burning it. Western rice is much easier to burn in my opinion because you use less water to make it, and only if you're not paying attention to cooking is that you'll burn it. In some cultures the crispy, not burnt, rice at the bottom made intentionally is as well regarded as the rice itself.

Rice cookers are good for people with no spare time (probably the average japanese salaryman i guess)

Never used one.

I wonder if the taste and consistency is the same of a traditionally boiled - steamed rice.

Here in Italy these cookers are really rare for a good reason: the preparation method is incompatible for the classic risotto.
(which is prepared by boiling and stirring broth and rice till all the broth is evaporated) .
Pretty tedious and long to prepare (at least 20 mins- half an hour and at least 15 mins of intermittent stirring) but oh boy if it's good.

Hey, woah, hold on. I eat Japanese food regularly. Like, once every other day or more often. But I also eat Chinese food as regularly and I usually cook French, German and/or Mexican at least two or three times a week; international cooking is my hobby. I like cooking and eating foods from many different countries; eating a Japanese dinner made from scratch (i.e. not a "Japanese dinner" that consists of 20-cent ramen, lipton iced tea and sushi that sat in a cold case for two days before you bought it) a few days a week does not make me a weeaboo.

Making bread by hand is a nice hobby to pick up. If you're interested at all, go ahead and by all means try making some without the machine. It's very calming to oversee the bread from start to finish. Baguettes are something to strive towards. The dough is very simple. It's just flour, water, yeast, and salt. The thing that will take a long time to get correct is the forming of the loaves, getting a nice crumb, and finding a way of baking that works for you.

Going to sleep with a bowl of poolish next to your bed and then waking up and seeing how it's changed to take on the beginnings of bread is one of my favorite things. I like how bubbly it looks and I like the smell.

I have ordered a rice cooker because it's cheaper in term of energy usage compared to my hot plate, and I happen to be on a saucepan shortage (three of them isn't enough) plus, it enables me to cook rice and make a roux at the same time, since I only have one functioning hot plate.
